Where the times come from: the Canadian date is from Drik Panchang. City times are calculated by HinduTone's calculator: sunrise and sunset by the Drik method, moonrise as the standard astronomical moonrise checked against the US Naval Observatory. All times are local daylight time; Canadian clocks fall back on Sunday 1 November, after Karwa Chauth.

Canada's late sunrises make this a shorter fast than in India. In Calgary the sun rises at 8:20 AM and the moon at 7:21 PM, about eleven hours later. In Toronto and Brampton the fast runs from just before 7:50 AM to about 7:40 PM. Edmonton has the earliest moonrise in our table, at 6:59 PM.
Why Canada keeps Karwa Chauth a day before India
Karwa Chauth is Kartika Krishna Chaturthi in the purnimanta calendar (Ashvin Krishna Chaturthi in the amanta calendar). It is kept on the day when the Chaturthi tithi is running at local moonrise.
A tithi begins and ends at one instant across the whole world. Canadian evenings come many hours after Indian ones, so Chaturthi is already running at moonrise on Wednesday 28 October in every Canadian city in our table. Drik Panchang therefore lists Wednesday 28 October for Canada (and the USA), and Thursday 29 October for India. If your family in Punjab or Delhi is fasting on Thursday, you fast on Wednesday.
Never copy India's moonrise time to Canada; every city has its own. For Indian city times, see our Karwa Chauth 2026 date and city-wise moonrise times guide.
The listed moonrise and the moon you actually see
- Astronomical moonrise (our table): when the upper edge of the moon reaches a flat, open horizon, allowing for refraction by the atmosphere. This is the convention used by the US Naval Observatory, which we checked against.
- Drik Panchang and apps: commonly a few minutes later, often about 4 to 7 minutes, because of a different convention.
- The real sighting: a row of houses, a tree line or a condo tower can hide the moon for some minutes more. From a high balcony with an eastern view, you may see it close to the listed time.
So step outside a little before your city's time, face east and wait for the moon itself. If the sky is overcast, follow your family custom.
Sargi, the fast and the evening puja
Sargi before dawn
The day begins with sargi, the pre-dawn meal that in many Punjabi families comes from the mother-in-law: fruit, dry fruits, mathri, pheni or sevaiyan in milk, and water or tea. In Brampton, finish before 7:48 AM; in Edmonton you have until 8:24 AM. Choose foods that keep you going: nuts, milk, paratha or poha, and plenty of water.
The fast
The traditional fast is nirjala, with neither food nor water until the moon is seen. Many women in Canada keep it this way; others take water or fruit, especially on a working day. Women dress in red, pink or bridal clothes, with mehendi applied the night before, bangles and sindoor.
Evening puja with the karwa and sieve
After sunset, women gather at home or with friends. The puja thali has a lit diya, roli, rice, sweets and a sieve (channi). The karwa, a small earthen or metal pot with a spout, is filled with water. Ganesha is worshipped first, then Gauri (Parvati) or Chauth Mata. In Punjabi homes the women sit in a circle and pass their thalis round while singing the traditional Karwa Chauth songs, and an elder tells the katha.
Moon arghya
When the moon is visible, the woman looks at it through the sieve and then at her husband's face through the same sieve. She offers arghya, pouring water from the karwa towards the moon, and prays for her husband's long life and the family's wellbeing. Her husband gives her the first sip of water and first bite of food to end the fast. Many husbands in Canada now fast too.
The Veeravati katha, as commonly told
The best-known Karwa Chauth story is that of Queen Veeravati, as commonly told. She was the only, dearly loved sister of seven brothers. On her first Karwa Chauth, spent at her parents' home, she grew weak with hunger and thirst as the evening wore on. Her brothers, unable to watch her suffer, lit a fire behind a tree (some versions say a lamp, or a mirror held up high) to look like the rising moon.
Believing the moon had risen, Veeravati broke her fast. Soon news came that her husband had died. In most tellings, Goddess Parvati revealed that the moon had been false, and Veeravati kept the vrat with full devotion through the year until the next Karwa Chauth, when her husband was restored to life.
Families tell it with many local variations. Its lesson fits the moonrise question neatly: the fast ends when the real moon is seen.
Practical tips for Karwa Chauth in Canada
- A working Wednesday: 28 October is a normal work and school day. Keep the afternoon light, skip the gym and avoid long drives near the end of the fast.
- Cold evening: late-October evenings are chilly in Ontario and Quebec and colder on the Prairies, sometimes near freezing after dark. Wear a warm coat over your outfit, and keep the wait outdoors short; watch from a window if you can.
- Hydration: drink well the night before and at sargi. If you feel faint or unwell, have water at once.
- Health exemptions: pregnant or breastfeeding women, diabetics, anyone on regular medication or with heart or kidney conditions should ask a doctor and keep a fruit or water fast, or the puja alone.
- Video call with family in India: India fasts on Thursday 29 October, the day after you, and its Thursday-evening moonrise falls during the Canadian morning. Many families join the Indian katha by video on Thursday, or share photos of the thalis and the moon.
- Community puja: many mandirs and community groups hold evening Karwa Chauth gatherings. Check your local temple's own announcements; we do not list events or timings.
After Karwa Chauth: Ahoi Ashtami and Diwali
Ahoi Ashtami, the mothers' fast for their children, is on Sunday 1 November 2026 in India by Drik Panchang; check Drik for your Canadian city (see our Ahoi Ashtami 2026 guide). In Canada, Dhanteras is on Friday 6 November and Diwali on Sunday 8 November 2026. For local Lakshmi Puja times see Diwali 2026 in Canada: Lakshmi Puja muhurat city by city, and for the whole month our October 2026 Hindu festival calendar.
Family in the USA keeps the same Wednesday: see Karwa Chauth 2026 USA moonrise times. The UK follows India's Thursday 29 October: see Karwa Chauth 2026 UK moonrise times.

On Wednesday 28 October 2026, moonrise in Brampton is at 7:40 PM local time (standard astronomical moonrise). Sunset is at 6:16 PM and the fast begins at sunrise, 7:48 AM. Drik Panchang and apps may show a time a few minutes later, and the moon can take a little longer to clear houses and trees. Break the fast when you actually see the moon.
What time is moonrise on Karwa Chauth 2026 in Toronto?
7:39 PM on Wednesday 28 October 2026. Sunset is 6:15 PM and sunrise, when the fast begins, is 7:46 AM. In Mississauga and nearby GTA suburbs, use Toronto or Brampton as a rough guide and confirm on Drik Panchang.
Is Karwa Chauth 2026 on 28 or 29 October in Canada?
In Canada it is Wednesday 28 October 2026, the same day as the USA and one day before India (Thursday 29 October). Drik Panchang gives 28 October for Canada because the Chaturthi tithi is running at local moonrise that evening in every Canadian city in our table.
Why is my app showing a later moonrise time?
Our table gives the standard astronomical moonrise, checked against the US Naval Observatory: the moment the top of the moon reaches a flat horizon. Drik Panchang and many apps use a different convention and usually show a time about 4 to 7 minutes later. Either way, the custom is to break the fast on actually seeing the moon.
What should I do if it is cloudy in Canada on Karwa Chauth night?
Late-October skies in Canada are often cloudy. Families follow their own custom: some wait, some complete the arghya facing the moon's direction after moonrise, and some see the moon on a live video from relatives where the sky is clear. Ask your elders what your family does.
Can I keep the Karwa Chauth fast if I am pregnant or diabetic?
Talk to your doctor first. Many pregnant, breastfeeding or diabetic women, and those on medication, keep a gentle fast with water, milk or fruit, or do the puja and katha without fasting. The tradition values devotion, not risk to health.
