Quick answer: Karwa Chauth 2026 in Europe is on Thursday 29 October 2026 (Drik), the same day as India. The Karwa Chauth 2026 Europe moonrise time is 6:55 PM in Frankfurt, 6:17 PM in Berlin, 7:30 PM in Paris, 6:54 PM in Amsterdam, 7:21 PM in Milan, 8:38 PM in Madrid and 6:33 PM in Dublin, local time. The fast runs from local sunrise until the moon is seen.

Every time in this guide is local winter time, because European clocks go back one hour on Sunday 25 October 2026, four days before Karwa Chauth. Dublin and Lisbon are on Greenwich/Western European time; all the other cities are on Central European Time.

Where the times come from: the date is from Drik Panchang. City sunrise and moonrise are from HinduTone's calculator: sunrise by the Drik method, moonrise as the standard astronomical moonrise, checked against the US Naval Observatory. Drik Panchang may show a moonrise a few minutes later than ours.

If your town is not listed, the nearest city in the same country is a rough guide only. Moonrise moves with both latitude and longitude, so check Drik Panchang for your own town, for example Stuttgart, Düsseldorf, Rotterdam, Eindhoven, Lyon, Bologna, Cork or Gothenburg.

The spread across Europe is wide. In Stockholm the moon is up at 4:39 PM, while in Madrid it rises at 8:38 PM, so a woman in Madrid fasts from 7:39 AM to 8:38 PM. Spain and Portugal sit far to the west of their time zones, which pushes both sunrise and moonrise late on the clock.

Why Europe keeps Thursday 29 October, like India

Karwa Chauth is Kartika Krishna Chaturthi in the purnimanta calendar (Ashvin Krishna Chaturthi in the amanta calendar). It is normally kept on the day when the Chaturthi tithi is running at local moonrise.

A tithi begins and ends at the same instant all over the world, but moonrise happens at different moments in each city. In 2026, for most of central and western Europe, Chaturthi has not begun when the moon rises on Wednesday evening and has already ended when it rises on Thursday evening. Our calculation shows this for Frankfurt, Paris, Amsterdam, Milan, Madrid, Dublin and the other cities in the table, just as in the UK. So the moonrise rule alone does not pick a day, and Europe follows Drik Panchang's country date: Thursday 29 October.

Stockholm and Oslo are the exception that confirms the date. There the moon rises early, at 4:39 PM and 4:58 PM on Thursday, and our calculation shows Chaturthi still running at that moonrise. In the Nordic capitals the classic rule and Drik's date agree on Thursday 29 October.

Relatives in the USA and Canada keep Karwa Chauth on Wednesday 28 October (Drik), because their evenings fall later on the world clock. Both dates are right for where people live. If your temple or family calendar says otherwise, follow it.

Never copy India's moonrise time to Europe; every city has its own. For Indian cities, see Karwa Chauth 2026: date and city-wise moonrise times, and for Britain, Karwa Chauth 2026 in the UK, city by city.

The clocks go back on 25 October: what changes

On Sunday 25 October 2026, summer time ends across the European Union, Switzerland, Norway and Ireland. Clocks go back one hour, so by Thursday every sunrise and moonrise is an hour earlier on the clock than it would have been the week before. Our table already uses the new winter time.

  • Phones update themselves, but check: old reminders, printed calendars or a WhatsApp forward made in summer time can be an hour out.
  • Dark early: sunset comes well before moonrise in most cities, so the last part of the fast is spent in the dark. Plan the puja for the early evening and keep the moon-watching for afterwards.
  • Different time zones: Dublin and Lisbon are one hour behind Frankfurt or Paris on the clock. If you are on a video call with family elsewhere in Europe, compare local times, not just numbers.

The listed moonrise and the moon you actually see

  • Astronomical moonrise (our table): the moment the upper edge of the moon reaches a flat, open horizon, allowing for refraction, as published by the US Naval Observatory.
  • Drik Panchang and apps: may show a time a few minutes later because of a different convention.
  • The real sighting: apartment blocks, church towers, hills and trees can hide a low moon for some minutes. A high balcony facing east or an open park gives the best chance.

Go to your viewing spot a little before the listed time and wait for the moon itself. If autumn cloud or rain hides it, follow your family's custom: some wait, some offer arghya facing the moon's direction, and some see it on a video call from a relative with a clear sky.

Sargi, the fast and the evening puja

Sargi before dawn

The day begins with sargi, the pre-dawn meal, often given by the mother-in-law in Punjabi families: fruit, dry fruits, mathri, pheni or sevaiyan in milk, and water or tea. In Warsaw finish before 6:23 AM; in Madrid you have until 7:39 AM. Include protein and drink plenty of water.

The fast

The traditional fast is nirjala, without food or water until the moon is seen. Thursday is a working day across Europe, so many women keep the fast at the office or in a lab or hospital. Some keep it strictly; others take water or fruit. Women dress in red or bridal colours, with mehendi applied the evening before, bangles and sindoor.

Evening puja with the karwa and the sieve

The thali holds a lit diya, roli, rice, sweets and a sieve (channi). The karwa, a small earthen or metal pot with a spout, is filled with water. Ganesha is worshipped first, then Gauri (Parvati) or Chauth Mata. In Punjabi gatherings women sit in a circle and pass their thalis round while singing the Karwa Chauth song. In Germany, the Netherlands, France, Italy, Ireland and Scandinavia this often happens in a home or a hired community hall; if your temple holds a group puja, check its own notices for the arrangements.

The katha

The best-known story, as commonly told, is that of Veeravati, the only sister of seven brothers. Unable to bear her hunger, her brothers made a false moon with a lamp behind a tree. She broke her fast early and her husband fell gravely ill. Through a year of devotion and a true Karwa Chauth fast, the goddess restored him. Other families tell the story of Karva, who saved her husband from a crocodile, or of Savitri. Read the version your family keeps.

Breaking the fast

When the moon is seen, the woman looks at it through the sieve, then at her husband, offers water (arghya) from the karwa to the moon, and takes her first sip of water and first bite from her husband's hand. Then the family eats together.

Practical tips for Europe in late October

  • Cold evenings: late October evenings can be cold and wet, especially in Scandinavia, Germany, the Netherlands and Ireland. Wear a warm layer over your outfit for the moon-watching.
  • Lamps indoors: keep the diya on a metal plate, away from curtains and smoke alarms, and never leave it unattended. Many rented flats do not allow open flames on balconies.
  • Workday planning: if you can, take a half day or work from home. Keep the evening simple and eat a light, warm meal after the fast.
  • Health first: if you feel faint, drink water. A gentle fast is as valid as a strict one.

After Karwa Chauth, the next big dates in Europe are Diwali (Lakshmi Puja) on Sunday 8 November and Chhath on Sunday 15 November. See Lakshmi Puja muhurat 2026 in Europe, city by city and Chhath Puja 2026 in Europe.

Frequently asked questions

On Thursday 29 October 2026, moonrise in Frankfurt is at 6:55 PM (Central European Time) and the fast begins at sunrise, 7:08 AM. This is the standard astronomical moonrise; Drik Panchang may show a time a few minutes later. Break the fast when you actually see the moon.

What time is the Karwa Chauth moon in Paris on 29 October 2026?

7:30 PM in Paris, with sunrise (the start of the fast) at 7:30 AM. Paris has one of the later moonrises in our table because it sits in the west of the Central European time zone.

When does the moon rise in Amsterdam on Karwa Chauth 2026?

Is Karwa Chauth 2026 on 28 or 29 October in Germany and the rest of Europe?

Thursday 29 October 2026, the same day as India. Drik Panchang lists 29 October for Germany and Europe. Note that the USA and Canada keep it on Wednesday 28 October.

What time is moonrise for Karwa Chauth in Stockholm and Oslo?

4:39 PM in Stockholm and 4:58 PM in Oslo on Thursday 29 October 2026. These are the earliest moonrises in our table, and in both cities our calculation shows Chaturthi running at that moonrise, so the classic rule and Drik's date agree on Thursday.

Can I fast on Karwa Chauth if I am pregnant or diabetic?

Speak to your doctor or midwife first. Many women who are pregnant, breastfeeding, diabetic or on medication keep a gentle fast with water, milk or fruit, or keep the puja and katha without fasting. Health comes first.
