Why Gita Jayanti is celebrated

The Bhagavad Gita is a dialogue of about 700 verses in 18 chapters. It is part of the Bhishma Parva of the Mahabharata. As commonly told, the Pandava and Kaurava armies stood facing each other at Kurukshetra. Arjuna saw his teachers, cousins and elders in the opposite army. He lost heart, put down his bow and said he would not fight.

Krishna, who was Arjuna's charioteer, then taught him about duty, the eternal Self, selfless action, knowledge and devotion. Tradition holds that this teaching was given on Margashirsha Shukla Ekadashi. So this Ekadashi is celebrated as the birthday, or jayanti, of the Gita. It is one of the very few Hindu festivals that honours a scripture rather than a deity's birth.

Many devotees also recall that in the Gita (chapter 10, verse 35) Krishna says that among the months he is Margashirsha. This gives the whole month a special place for Krishna worship.

A verse to remember on Gita Jayanti

One of the best-known verses of the Gita is chapter 2, verse 47:

कर्मण्येवाधिकारस्ते मा फलेषु कदाचन ।

मा कर्मफलहेतुर्भूर्मा ते सङ्गोऽस्त्वकर्मणि ॥ २.४७ ॥

karmaṇy evādhikāras te mā phaleṣu kadācana

mā karma-phala-hetur bhūr mā te saṅgo 'stv akarmaṇi

Meaning: You have a right to your action alone, never to its fruits. Do not let the fruits of action be your motive, and do not be attached to inaction.

In simple words: do your duty well and sincerely, offer the result to God, and do not give up on work out of fear or laziness. This verse is a good starting point for children and for anyone new to the Gita.

Gita path ideas for the day

Gita path means reading or reciting the Gita. There is no single fixed method. Choose what suits your family:

  • Full recitation: Some temples and study groups recite all 18 chapters together on Gita Jayanti. If you join one, follow the group's pace.
  • One chapter: Read one chapter with its meaning. Chapter 12 (Bhakti Yoga) is short. Chapter 15 (Purushottama Yoga) is often recited before meals in some families.
  • Chapter 2 at home: Read chapter 2, where Krishna first teaches Arjuna about the Self and selfless action.
  • Verse a day: Pick one verse, read it in Sanskrit and in your own language, and talk about it at dinner. Start a habit of one verse a day for the coming year.
  • Listen: If reading Sanskrit is hard, listen to a recitation while following a translation.
  • Share the book: Many people gift a copy of the Gita to a friend, a library or a young person on this day.

Before reading, light a lamp, place a picture of Krishna and Arjuna on the chariot, and offer flowers and tulsi leaves. Keep the book on a clean cloth or stand, not on the floor.

International Gita Mahotsav at Kurukshetra

Kurukshetra in Haryana is honoured as the land where the Gita was spoken. Jyotisar, near Kurukshetra, is the spot where, by tradition, Krishna gave the teaching to Arjuna. Around Gita Jayanti each year, Kurukshetra hosts a large festival known as the International Gita Mahotsav. It usually includes Gita recitation, aarti at the Brahma Sarovar tank, cultural programmes, exhibitions and crafts fairs.

We do not list the 2026 programme or dates here. If you plan to visit, check the official festival announcements closer to the time. Many cities in India and abroad also hold their own Gita Jayanti readings at temples and cultural centres. Check your local temple's website or notice board.

Mokshada Ekadashi vrat and parana

The name Mokshada means 'giver of liberation'. As commonly told in the Ekadashi tradition, a king named Vaikhanasa dreamed that his late father was suffering after death. On the advice of a sage, he kept the Margashirsha Shukla Ekadashi fast and offered its merit to his father, who was then freed. For this reason, many devotees keep this Ekadashi with prayers for their ancestors.

A simple way to keep the vrat:

  1. On Dashami (the day before), eat a light, simple meal and avoid grains in the evening if that is your custom.
  2. On Ekadashi, bathe early, worship Vishnu or Krishna with tulsi leaves, a lamp, flowers and fruit.
  3. Fast according to your health and family custom: a full fast, a water fast, or fruit and milk only. Grains and beans are usually avoided.
  4. Spend time in Gita path, japa of 'Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya', or Vishnu Sahasranama.
  5. Break the fast (parana) on Monday 21 December, after sunrise and within Dwadashi. Check Drik Panchang for the parana window in your city.

People who are pregnant, elderly, diabetic or on medication should not fast without medical advice. A partial fast with sincere prayer is fully valid. Some sampradayas follow their own Ekadashi rules, so follow your family's tradition or your temple's calendar if it differs.

Are Gita Jayanti and Mokshada Ekadashi the same day?

Which Gita verse is best to start with?

Many people begin with chapter 2, verse 47, which teaches us to do our duty without clinging to the results. Others read chapter 12 on devotion, which is short and gentle. Any chapter read with attention is a good offering.

Do I need to read all 18 chapters on Gita Jayanti?

No. Some groups recite the full Gita of about 700 verses, but reading one chapter, or even a few verses with their meaning, is enough. Steady daily reading after the festival is more valuable than one long reading.
