Quick answer: Gita Jayanti 2026 USA dates: Sunday 20 December 2026 in New York, Edison, Washington DC, Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, Dallas and Phoenix, for both Smarta and Vaishnava families and the same day as India. In Los Angeles, the Bay Area and Seattle, the traditions split: Smarta households observe Saturday 19 December and Vaishnava traditions observe Sunday 20 December.

Gita Jayanti marks the day Lord Krishna taught the Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra, as commonly told. It is kept on Mokshada Ekadashi, the Ekadashi of the bright fortnight of Margashirsha. In 2026 that Ekadashi falls inside Dhanurmasam, so the same day is also Vaikuntha (Mukkoti) Ekadashi, one of the biggest days of the year at Vishnu and Venkateswara temples across the USA.

How these dates were made: the US dates below are computed with HinduTone's sunrise-tithi calculator (Drik Panchang method, validated to within 1–2 minutes). Please confirm on Drik Panchang for your own city and follow your temple's calendar. All dates are local.

For an Ekadashi, the deciding moment is local sunrise. Here is the Gita Jayanti / Mokshada Ekadashi date for each city, by tradition:

Why the West Coast has two dates for Gita Jayanti 2026

In India, Ekadashi is the tithi at sunrise on Sunday 20 December and ends around 8:15 PM IST that evening (calculated), so the date is clear. In the Eastern, Central and Mountain time zones of the USA, Ekadashi is also the tithi at local sunrise on Sunday 20 December. Smarta and Vaishnava families therefore fast on the same day.

On the West Coast the timing is different. In Los Angeles, San Jose and Seattle, Ekadashi begins after Saturday's local sunrise and ends before Sunday's, so it does not cover any local sunrise. When that happens, the two traditions follow different rules:

  • Smarta rule: the fast is kept on the earlier day, Saturday 19 December, the day on which the Ekadashi tithi actually runs.
  • Vaishnava rule: Ekadashi must not be touched by Dashami, so the fast moves to the next day, Sunday 20 December. ISKCON centres, Sri Vaishnava and Venkateswara temples generally follow this rule.

Neither date is wrong. Follow the tradition of your family or your temple. If your family is Smarta but your local Venkateswara temple marks Sunday, many people simply fast on Saturday and join the temple on Sunday for darshan and the Gita reading.

How families mark Gita Jayanti at home

Gita Jayanti is one of the few Hindu festivals centred on a text rather than an image. The simplest observance is to open the Gita and read. Here are the common ways US families mark the day:

  • Read one chapter together: Chapter 12 (Bhakti Yoga, the yoga of devotion) and Chapter 15 (Purushottama Yoga) are both 20 verses and can be chanted in about 15 minutes. Some families chant Chapter 15 before meals throughout the year.
  • All 18 chapters across the day: a family or a group of friends divides the 700 verses, each taking a few chapters, so the whole Gita is completed by evening. A video call lets grandparents in India join in.
  • Gita path with a lamp: set a picture of Krishna and Arjuna, light a ghee lamp, offer tulasi leaves and fruit, and keep the book on a clean cloth or stand rather than on the floor.
  • Kids' Gita quiz: ten simple questions (Who drove Arjuna's chariot? How many chapters are there? What is Chapter 2 called?) turn the evening into a game. Older children can explain one favourite verse in their own words.
  • Temple satsang: many Hindu temples and Gita study groups in the USA hold group recitation or talks around Gita Jayanti. Programmes vary, so check your local temple's website or newsletter for its plans.
  • A simple fast: because it is Ekadashi, many keep a fruit-and-milk fast and avoid grains and beans, breaking it the next morning in the parana window shown on Drik Panchang for their city.

A 7-day Gita Saptaha reading plan ending on your Gita Jayanti

A Gita Saptaha is a seven-day reading of the whole text. Start six days before your local Gita Jayanti so that Day 7 falls on it: begin on Monday if you observe Sunday 20 December, or on Sunday if you observe Saturday 19 December. Each day takes 30 to 60 minutes when read aloud.

DayChaptersTheme
Day 11–3Arjuna's despair; the soul is eternal; the yoga of action
Day 24–6Knowledge, renunciation in action, meditation
Day 37–9Knowledge of the Divine, the imperishable, the royal secret
Day 410–11Krishna's glories and the vision of the universal form
Day 512–14Devotion, the field and its knower, the three gunas
Day 615–16The Supreme Person; divine and demonic qualities
Day 7 (Gita Jayanti)17–18Three kinds of faith; liberation through surrender

Chapter 11 is long, which is why Day 4 has only two chapters. If seven days is too much in December, read Chapters 12 and 15 on the day itself and keep the full Saptaha for next year.

Gita Jayanti in the American winter: practical tips

  • Weekend timing: both Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 December are weekend days, so families everywhere can plan a home reading without taking leave. Expect larger crowds at Vishnu and Venkateswara temples on Sunday, as it is also Vaikuntha Ekadashi; go early and car-pool.
  • Cold and snow: in New York, Edison, Washington DC and Chicago, December mornings are dark and icy. Check road conditions before driving to a temple. Houston, Dallas, Phoenix and Southern California are much milder.
  • Winter break: many US school districts start winter break around the third week of December, so children are often free to join the Saptaha in its last days.
  • Holiday travel: if you fly to India before Gita Jayanti, follow India's date, Sunday 20 December, once you land. If you are flying on the day, reading a chapter on the plane is a perfectly good observance.
  • Lamps indoors: keep the diya on a metal plate, away from Christmas trees, curtains and smoke alarms, and never leave it alone.

Gita Jayanti 2026 USA: frequently asked questions

When is Gita Jayanti 2026 in New York?

Sunday 20 December 2026, for both Smarta and Vaishnava families. Edison, Washington DC and Atlanta have the same date. It is also the same day as Gita Jayanti in India.

When is Gita Jayanti 2026 in California and Seattle?

In Los Angeles, San Jose / Bay Area and Seattle the dates split by tradition: Smarta households observe Saturday 19 December 2026, and Vaishnava traditions (ISKCON, Sri Vaishnava and Venkateswara temples) observe Sunday 20 December 2026. The reason is that the Ekadashi tithi does not cover any local sunrise on the West Coast. Follow your temple's calendar.

When is Gita Jayanti 2026 in Chicago, Houston and Dallas?

Sunday 20 December 2026 in all three cities, for both traditions, the same as India. Phoenix also keeps Sunday 20 December.

Is Gita Jayanti the same day as Vaikuntha Ekadashi in 2026?

Yes. Gita Jayanti falls on Mokshada Ekadashi, the bright-half Ekadashi of Margashirsha. In 2026 this Ekadashi falls inside Dhanurmasam, so it is also Vaikuntha (Mukkoti) Ekadashi. Most families mark both on the same day.

Which chapter of the Gita should I read on Gita Jayanti?

There is no single rule. Chapter 12 (Bhakti Yoga) and Chapter 15 (Purushottama Yoga) are short and widely chanted. Many families and study groups read all 18 chapters across the day, or spread them over the week before, as in the plan in this guide.

Do I have to fast on Gita Jayanti?

No. A fast is traditional because the day is an Ekadashi, but reading and reflecting on the Gita is the heart of the observance. A light fruit-and-milk fast is common. If you are pregnant, elderly, diabetic or on medication, talk to your doctor before fasting.
