Gita Jayanti 2026 (Mokshada Ekadashi) in Canada, city by city: Sunday 20 December for both traditions in Toronto, Brampton, Ottawa and Montreal, the same day as India. In Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver, Smarta families observe Saturday 19 December and Vaishnava families Sunday 20 December.
Quick answer: Gita Jayanti 2026 in Canada is Sunday 20 December 2026 in Toronto, Brampton, Ottawa and Montreal, for Smarta and Vaishnava families alike and the same day as India. In Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver the date splits: Smarta households observe Saturday 19 December and Vaishnava traditions observe Sunday 20 December.
Gita Jayanti is celebrated on Mokshada Ekadashi, the bright-half Ekadashi of Margashirsha, remembered as the day Krishna taught the Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna on the field of Kurukshetra, as commonly told. In 2026 this Ekadashi falls inside Dhanurmasam, so it is also Vaikuntha (Mukkoti) Ekadashi, one of the busiest days of the year at Vishnu temples across Canada.
About these dates: the Canadian dates are computed with HinduTone's sunrise-tithi calculator, which follows the Drik Panchang method and has been validated against Drik Panchang to within 1–2 minutes. Please confirm on Drik Panchang for your city and follow your temple's calendar.
Gita Jayanti 2026 Canada: date city by city
Ekadashi is fixed by the tithi at local sunrise. Here is how that works out in seven Canadian cities:
| City | Time zone | Smarta date | Vaishnava date | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Toronto | America/Toronto | Sun 20 Dec 2026 | Sun 20 Dec 2026 | Same for both; same as India |
| Brampton | America/Toronto | Sun 20 Dec 2026 | Sun 20 Dec 2026 | Same for both; same as India |
| Ottawa | America/Toronto | Sun 20 Dec 2026 | Sun 20 Dec 2026 | Same for both; same as India |
| Montreal | America/Toronto | Sun 20 Dec 2026 | Sun 20 Dec 2026 | Same for both; same as India |
| Calgary | America/Edmonton | Sat 19 Dec 2026 | Sun 20 Dec 2026 | Split: no local sunrise in Ekadashi |
| Edmonton | America/Edmonton | Sat 19 Dec 2026 | Sun 20 Dec 2026 | Split: no local sunrise in Ekadashi |
| Vancouver | America/Vancouver | Sat 19 Dec 2026 | Sun 20 Dec 2026 | Split: no local sunrise in Ekadashi |
India: Gita Jayanti and Mokshada Ekadashi are on Sunday 20 December 2026 (calculated; confirm on Drik Panchang). India's tithi start and end times are for India only. Do not convert them to Canadian clocks; the table above already uses each city's own sunrise.
Cities not listed, such as Winnipeg, Halifax, Regina or Saskatoon, may fall on either side of the split. Look up your own city on Drik Panchang rather than copying a nearby one.
Why Western Canada has two dates
In Toronto, Brampton, Ottawa and Montreal, the Ekadashi tithi is running at sunrise on Sunday 20 December. Under both the Smarta rule and the Vaishnava rule that makes Sunday the fast day, so the whole community observes together, exactly as in India.
In Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver, Ekadashi begins after Saturday's local sunrise and ends before Sunday's local sunrise. No sunrise falls inside it. When that happens, the two traditions resolve it differently: Smarta households keep the day on which Ekadashi is current (Saturday 19 December), while Vaishnava traditions, including ISKCON, Sri Vaishnava and Venkateswara temples, keep the following day (Sunday 20 December). Neither is wrong; follow the practice of your family and your temple.
A note on Alberta and BC clocks: from November 2026, Alberta and British Columbia keep daylight time through the winter, and the time zones in our data reflect that. Local sunrise in Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver therefore comes late on the clock in December. The tithi rule itself does not depend on the clock, only on when the Sun actually rises, so the dates above are unaffected by how the clocks are labelled.
How Canadian families mark Gita Jayanti
- Read or chant the Gita: the heart of the day. Many families read Chapter 12 (Bhakti Yoga) or Chapter 15 (Purushottama Yoga), each just 20 verses. Others attempt all 18 chapters and about 700 verses across the day, taking turns among family members.
- A Gita path at home: set up a small altar with a picture of Krishna and Arjuna on the chariot, a lamp, flowers and a copy of the Gita. Offer the book itself a flower before reading, as many households do.
- Kids' Gita quiz: with school winter break around the corner, a short family quiz works well. Who drove Arjuna's chariot? What is the name of Chapter 2 (Sankhya Yoga)? How many chapters are there? Small prizes keep it lively.
- Temple satsang: many Hindu temples and Gita study circles in Canada hold Gita readings or talks around this weekend. Check your temple's website or newsletter for its own programme; we do not list events or timings.
- A simple fast: Mokshada Ekadashi is often kept as a grain-free fast with fruit, milk and nuts, broken the next morning. Keep it to what is comfortable for your health.
- Seva: the Gita teaches action without attachment to the fruits. Many families use the day for a donation to a food bank or a volunteer shift, a fitting practice in a Canadian December.
A 7-day Gita Saptaha reading plan ending on your Gita Jayanti
A Gita Saptaha (seven-day reading) is a gentle way to finish the full text by Gita Jayanti. Count back from your local date: if you observe Sunday 20 December, Day 1 is Monday 14 December; if your family keeps the Smarta date of Saturday 19 December in Calgary, Edmonton or Vancouver, Day 1 is Sunday 13 December.
| Day | Chapters | Theme |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | 1–3 | Arjuna's despair, Sankhya Yoga, Karma Yoga |
| Day 2 | 4–6 | Knowledge, renunciation of action, meditation |
| Day 3 | 7–9 | Knowledge and realisation, the imperishable, the royal secret |
| Day 4 | 10–11 | Divine glories and the universal form |
| Day 5 | 12–14 | Devotion, the field and its knower, the three gunas |
| Day 6 | 15–17 | The Supreme Person, divine and demonic natures, threefold faith |
| Day 7 (Gita Jayanti) | 18, then repeat 12 or 15 together | Liberation through renunciation; family recitation |
Fifteen to forty minutes a day is enough for most families. Busy weekday readers can listen to a recitation on the commute and read the meaning in the evening. For an overview of every chapter, see our Bhagavad Gita guide to all 18 chapters.
Winter and holiday practicalities in Canada
- Cold mornings: December mornings on the Prairies can reach -20°C. If you plan an early temple visit, check road conditions first and dress for waiting outside; on bad-weather days, a home reading is a complete observance.
- Weekend crowds: with Vaikuntha Ekadashi on Sunday 20 December for most of Canada, expect busy parking lots and queues at Vishnu and Venkateswara temples. Check your temple's website for its own arrangements.
- Winter break and travel: schools break for the holidays soon after, and many families fly to India over Christmas and New Year. If you are in India on Gita Jayanti, use India's date (Sunday 20 December).
- Lamps safely: keep diyas on a metal tray, away from curtains, Christmas trees and smoke detectors.
For the rest of the season, see the December 2026 Hindu festivals in Canada calendar and Dhanurmasam 2026 in Canada, which begins a few days before Gita Jayanti.
Frequently asked questions
When is Gita Jayanti 2026 in Toronto?
Sunday 20 December 2026. In Toronto, Mokshada Ekadashi is the tithi at local sunrise that day, so Smarta and Vaishnava families keep the same date, which is also the date in India. Brampton, Ottawa and Montreal have the same date.
When is Gita Jayanti 2026 in Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton?
There are two dates. Smarta households observe Saturday 19 December 2026 and Vaishnava traditions (ISKCON, Sri Vaishnava and Venkateswara temples) observe Sunday 20 December 2026. In these cities the Ekadashi tithi does not include any local sunrise, which is why the traditions differ. Follow your temple's calendar.
Is Gita Jayanti the same day as Vaikuntha Ekadashi in 2026?
Yes. In 2026 Mokshada Ekadashi falls inside Dhanurmasam, so the same Ekadashi is also Vaikuntha (Mukkoti) Ekadashi. Families in Canada usually mark both on the Ekadashi date they observe.
Which Gita chapter should I read on Gita Jayanti?
Any reading is good. Many families choose Chapter 12 (Bhakti Yoga, 20 verses) or Chapter 15 (Purushottama Yoga, 20 verses) because they are short. Others read all 18 chapters across the day, or finish a week-long reading on Gita Jayanti.
Do I have to fast on Gita Jayanti?
No. A fast on Mokshada Ekadashi is a personal vow. A grain-free fruit-and-milk fast is common. If you are pregnant, older, diabetic or on medication, talk to a doctor first, and in a Canadian winter keep warm drinks at hand.
Is Gita Jayanti on 20 December in India too?
Yes. In India Gita Jayanti and Mokshada Ekadashi fall on Sunday 20 December 2026, and Toronto, Brampton, Ottawa and Montreal match it. Do not convert India's tithi times to Canadian time; use your own city's date.
