Eastern and Western Canada differ on two festivals.
Quick answer: the December 2026 Hindu festivals in Canada run from Kalabhairav Jayanti on Monday 30 November to Saphala Ekadashi on Saturday 2 January 2027. In between come Utpanna Ekadashi (Fri 4 Dec), Masik Shivaratri (Sun 6 Dec), Vivah Panchami (Sun 13 Dec), Vaikuntha Ekadashi and Gita Jayanti (Sun 20 Dec, the same day as India, in Toronto and Montreal) and Datta Jayanti (Wed 23 Dec).
Canada splits into two groups this month. Toronto and Montreal follow the Eastern pattern; Calgary and Vancouver observe Champa Shashti a day earlier, on Monday 14 December, and there Vaikuntha Ekadashi splits: Smarta households fast on Saturday 19 December and Vaishnava traditions on Sunday 20 December. Across the country, four festivals come one day before India's date.
About these dates: all Canadian dates, including the Smarta and Vaishnava Vaikuntha Ekadashi dates, are computed with HinduTone's sunrise-tithi calculator (Drik method, validated against Drik Panchang, typically within 1–2 minutes) — confirm on Drik Panchang for your city and follow your temple's calendar. Drik Panchang's own Canada calendar gives the same dates for Kalabhairav Jayanti (30 Nov), Utpanna Ekadashi (4 Dec) and Masik Shivaratri (6 Dec). Times are local.

Why does Vancouver differ from Toronto? Local sunrise in British Columbia comes more than three hours later on the world clock than in Ontario, so a tithi that is present at Toronto's sunrise may already have ended by Vancouver's. That is what moves Champa Shashti, and it also splits Vaikuntha Ekadashi in the West.
Why Calgary and Vancouver have two Vaikuntha Ekadashi dates: in Toronto and Montreal, Ekadashi is the tithi at sunrise on Sunday 20 December, so Smarta and Vaishnava families fast together, as in India. In Calgary and Vancouver, Ekadashi begins after Saturday's sunrise and ends before Sunday's, so no local sunrise falls inside it. In that case the traditions part: Smarta households fast on Saturday 19 December, while Vaishnava traditions (ISKCON, Sri Vaishnava and Venkateswara temples) fast on Sunday 20 December. Follow your temple's calendar; see our full Vaikuntha Ekadashi guide.
Two Karthika links stay important: Kalabhairav Jayanti on Monday 30 November falls on a Karthika Somavaram in Canada, and Masik Shivaratri on Sunday 6 December comes the day before the last Somavaram (Mon 7 Dec). For the whole month see Karthika Masam 2026 in Canada, city by city.
Dhanu Sankranti 2026 in Canada: start of Dhanurmasam and Margazhi
| City | Dhanu Sankranti (local time) |
|---|---|
| Toronto | Tue 15 Dec 2026, 11:41 PM |
| Montreal | Tue 15 Dec 2026, 11:41 PM |
| Calgary | Tue 15 Dec 2026, 10:41 PM |
| Vancouver | Tue 15 Dec 2026, 9:41 PM |
The Sun enters Dhanu (Sagittarius) late on Tuesday night everywhere in Canada, so the first Dhanurmasam dawn after it is Wednesday 16 December, the same calendar day the month begins in India. Telugu and Kannada families call it Dhanurmasam; Tamil families, including Canada's large Sri Lankan Tamil community, know it as Margazhi, the month of Tiruppavai and Tiruvempavai. Regional calendars count day one in their own way, so follow your temple. See Dhanurmasam daily rituals.
The festivals in brief, the Canadian way
- Kalabhairav Jayanti (Mon 30 Nov): the appearance day of Kala Bhairava, Shiva's fierce guardian form. As commonly told, he humbled Brahma's pride and became the protector of Kashi. A lamp of sesame or mustard oil in the evening and the Kalabhairava Ashtakam are simple home observances. See Kalabhairava Jayanti 2026.
- Utpanna Ekadashi (Fri 4 Dec): as commonly told, the goddess Ekadashi emerged from Vishnu to defeat the demon Mura. A Friday fast before the weekend is manageable for working families. See Utpanna Ekadashi 2026.
- Masik Shivaratri (Sun 6 Dec): the Karthika Masa Shivaratri. On a Sunday, families can attend abhishekam at a Shiva temple or do a home Rudrabhishekam. See Karthika Masa Shivaratri 2026 (India's date there is Mon 7 Dec).
- Vivah Panchami (Sun 13 Dec): Rama and Sita's wedding day, as commonly told. A Sunday reading of the Sita swayamvara and kalyanam story suits children. See Vivah Panchami 2026.
- Champa Shashti / Subrahmanya Shashti (Tue 15 Dec East; Mon 14 Dec West): Khandoba's victory over Mani and Malla for Maharashtrian families, as commonly told, and Subrahmanya worship for Kannada and South Indian families. See Subrahmanya Shashti 2026.
- Vaikuntha Ekadashi and Gita Jayanti (Sun 20 Dec; in Calgary and Vancouver, Smarta Sat 19 Dec): this Mokshada Ekadashi falls in Dhanurmasam, so it is Vaikuntha (Mukkoti) Ekadashi, and it is also Gita Jayanti, the day of the Bhagavad Gita as commonly told. Many families mark Gita Jayanti on the Ekadashi they observe, reading a Gita chapter, and pass through the Vaikuntha dwaram at a Vishnu temple. See Gita Jayanti 2026 and Vaikuntha Ekadashi 2026 in Canada.
- Datta Jayanti / Margashirsha Purnima (Wed 23 Dec): the birth of Dattatreya, son of Atri and Anasuya as commonly told, and Annapurna Jayanti. See Datta Jayanti 2026.
- Saphala Ekadashi (Sat 2 Jan 2027): the "fruitful" Ekadashi of Pausha, the first Ekadashi of the new year in Canada, on a Saturday.
Health note: Ekadashi and Shivaratri fasts are vows, not endurance tests. Choose a partial fast if you are unwell, and ask a doctor first if you are pregnant, older, diabetic or on medication.
Winter practicalities for Canadian families
- Snow and driving: December roads in Ontario, Quebec and the Prairies can be icy. For pre-dawn Dhanurmasam worship, do the puja at home and visit the temple on the weekend instead of driving in the dark on bad roads.
- Crowds on 20 December: Sunday 20 December is Vaikuntha Ekadashi for most Canadian families, so expect heavy crowds and long parking queues at Vishnu and Venkateswara temples. Dress for waiting outside in the cold, and check your temple's website for its own darshan arrangements; we do not list timings.
- Christmas and Boxing Day: Christmas Day is Friday 25 December and Boxing Day is Saturday 26 December. With school winter break, the days around Datta Jayanti are a good time for family puja, but temples near malls and highways can be busy.
- Kolam indoors: Margazhi kolams are traditionally drawn at the doorstep at dawn. In a Canadian winter, draw it on a board or mat inside the door.
- Flying to India: if you travel for the holidays, use India's dates after landing. Saphala Ekadashi is Sunday 3 January in India, a day later than in Canada.
- Lamps safely: keep diyas on a metal tray, away from curtains, trees and smoke detectors, and never leave them burning when you go out.

Frequently asked questions
When is Vaikuntha Ekadashi 2026 in Canada?
In Toronto and Montreal it is Sunday 20 December 2026 for both Smarta and Vaishnava families, the same day as India. In Calgary and Vancouver, Ekadashi does not touch any local sunrise, so Smarta households fast on Saturday 19 December and Vaishnava traditions (ISKCON, Sri Vaishnava and Venkateswara temples) on Sunday 20 December. Gita Jayanti is the same Mokshada Ekadashi, and many families mark it on the Ekadashi they observe. Follow your temple's calendar.
Why are some Canadian dates a day earlier than India's?
Each festival is fixed by the tithi at a local moment: sunrise, evening or midnight. Canadian clocks are roughly 10.5 to 13.5 hours behind India's, so for Kalabhairav Jayanti, Masik Shivaratri, Vivah Panchami and Saphala Ekadashi the deciding moment falls a day earlier in every Canadian city in our table.
Do Toronto and Vancouver have the same festival dates in December 2026?
Mostly yes, but not for two festivals. Champa Shashti is Tuesday 15 December in Toronto and Montreal but Monday 14 December in Calgary and Vancouver. Vaikuntha Ekadashi is Sunday 20 December for everyone in Toronto and Montreal, while in Calgary and Vancouver Smarta households fast on Saturday 19 December and Vaishnava traditions on Sunday 20 December.
When does Dhanurmasam begin in Canada?
Dhanu Sankranti falls on Tuesday 15 December 2026 at 11:41 PM in Toronto and Montreal, 10:41 PM in Calgary and 9:41 PM in Vancouver (local time). The first dawn after it is Wednesday 16 December. Follow your temple for how it counts the first day of the month.
When is Saphala Ekadashi 2027 in Canada?
Saturday 2 January 2027 in Toronto, Montreal, Calgary and Vancouver. In India it is Sunday 3 January 2027.
Should I fast in very cold weather?
A fast is a personal vow. In a Canadian winter, a fruit-and-milk fast with warm water or herbal drinks is a sensible traditional choice. People who are pregnant, elderly, diabetic or on medication should talk to a doctor before fasting.
