Quick answer: Govardhan Puja 2026 UAE falls on Monday 9 November 2026, one day before India, where it is on Tuesday 10 November. That is the Drik Panchang date for the UAE, the same in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and the other emirates.
This one surprises many UAE families, because the Emirates usually share India's festival dates. This year Diwali, and even Narak Chaturdashi, are on Sunday 8 November in both countries. But Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj each come a day earlier in the UAE. Since the UAE work week runs Monday to Friday, Govardhan Puja falls on the first working day after Diwali.

Why the UAE is a day early this time
Govardhan Puja is celebrated on Pratipada, the first lunar day of Kartika's bright fortnight. The civil date is set by how that tithi falls against local sunrise. The UAE is only about an hour and a half behind India, which usually makes no difference. But when the change of tithi falls close to the deciding point, even that short gap can move a festival onto a different day.
In 2026 Drik Panchang's calculation puts the deciding morning on Monday for the UAE and on Tuesday for India. If your family in Gujarat or Rajasthan celebrates on Tuesday, both of you are right for your own location.
The Govardhan story as commonly told
As commonly told, the people of Vraj used to hold a great sacrifice for Indra each year to ask for rain. Krishna suggested they worship Govardhan Hill instead, which gave their cows pasture and their village water. Indra, offended, sent a violent storm. Krishna lifted Govardhan on his little finger and the whole village, with its cattle, sheltered under it, many say for seven days. Indra's pride was broken and he praised Krishna.
The Annakut, or "mountain of food", recalls the feast the villagers prepared for the hill. It is a festival of gratitude, sharing and trust in the divine.
A Govardhan and Annakut in a UAE flat
In India, Govardhan is traditionally shaped from cow dung in the courtyard. In a high-rise apartment in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, that is neither possible nor hygienic, and building rules rarely allow anything like it in corridors or on balconies. Families here keep the spirit with simple substitutes:
- Dough Govardhan: shape wheat-flour dough into a hill on a tray, with toy cows and a small Krishna on top.
- Rice or sweets mountain: heap cooked rice or laddus at the centre of the Annakut spread.
- Rangoli: draw Govardhan on a board with coloured powder at the door of the flat.
- Parikrama: walk around the tray or the home mandir seven times while singing a Krishna bhajan.
For the Annakut, prepare a range of vegetarian dishes such as mixed vegetable sabzi, kadhi, dal, rice, puris, farsan and sweets. Fresh Indian vegetables and sweets are easy to find in the UAE, so a generous spread is within reach even on a weekday. Offer it to Krishna, do aarti, and then share it with family and neighbours.
Weekday, weather and apartment tips
- Monday is a working and school day. Cook on Sunday after the Lakshmi Puja and do the Govardhan Puja in the evening.
- November evenings are usually pleasant, but most buildings do not allow open flames on balconies. Keep real diyas indoors on a metal tray and away from smoke detectors.
- Use electric diyas or fairy lights for windows and balconies.
- Share Annakut prasad with neighbours of all faiths; it is a warm way to introduce the festival.
Temple Annakut in the UAE
Hindu temples in Dubai and Abu Dhabi draw large crowds during Diwali week, and an Annakut offering is part of the celebrations at many of them. Arrangements, dates and visitor rules vary, and some temples ask visitors to register in advance at busy times. We have not listed specific events. Check your temple's official website or social media for its own schedule and any registration requirements.
Gujarati New Year and Bali Pratipada
For the UAE's Gujarati families, the day after Diwali is also Bestu Varas, the Gujarati New Year, marked with new clothes, visits to elders and "Saal Mubarak" greetings. Maharashtrian families keep Diwali Padwa, and Kannadiga families Bali Pratipada, recalling King Mahabali. In India these are on Tuesday 10 November 2026. As they share the Pratipada with Govardhan Puja, check your temple or Gujarati calendar for the UAE date.
Frequently asked questions
When is Govardhan Puja 2026 in the UAE?
Drik Panchang gives Monday 9 November 2026 for the UAE. In India it is Tuesday 10 November.
The UAE is so close to India in time. Why is the date different?
The UAE is about one and a half hours behind India. Govardhan Puja is fixed by Kartika Shukla Pratipada at the local morning, and in 2026 that small gap is enough to put the deciding morning on Monday in the UAE and on Tuesday in India.
Is Diwali on the same day in the UAE and India?
Yes. Diwali (Lakshmi Puja) is Sunday 8 November 2026 in both. Narak Chaturdashi is also Sunday 8 November in both. Only Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj move a day earlier in the UAE.
What time should I do Govardhan Puja in Dubai?
We do not list a clock muhurat. Check Drik Panchang with Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah selected. Do not use India's muhurat in the UAE.
Can I make Govardhan without cow dung?
Yes. A small hill of wheat-flour dough, cooked rice or sweets, or a rangoli drawing, is what most families in flats use.
When is the Gujarati New Year in 2026?
In India, Bestu Varas and Bali Pratipada are on Tuesday 10 November 2026. Check your temple or Gujarati calendar for the date used in the UAE.
