Quick answer: Govardhan Puja 2026 UK falls on Monday 9 November 2026, one day before India, where it is on Tuesday 10 November. That is the Drik Panchang date for the UK, across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

British families will go straight from Diwali on Sunday 8 November into Govardhan Puja on Monday. In India, Monday is a gap day and Govardhan Puja comes on Tuesday. Monday is a normal school and working day in the UK, and it gets dark by late afternoon, so most homes will hold the puja in the evening.

Why the UK date is a day earlier

The UK is usually on the same festival dates as India, so a one-day difference can surprise people. Govardhan Puja is kept on Pratipada, the first lunar day of the bright fortnight of Kartika, and the civil day is chosen by how that tithi sits against local sunrise. The tithi changes at a single moment worldwide, but sunrise in Leicester comes hours after sunrise in Vadodara.

In 2026 Drik Panchang's calculation tips the deciding morning onto Monday for the UK and Tuesday for India. Follow the UK date where you live.

The Govardhan story as commonly told

As commonly told, the people of Vraj were preparing a grand offering for Indra, king of the gods and giver of rain. Krishna, still a boy, persuaded them to honour Govardhan Hill instead, since the hill and its pastures sustained their cows. Indra sent torrents of rain in anger. Krishna raised the hill on his little finger and held it aloft as a shelter for the whole village, often said to be for seven days, until Indra gave up and acknowledged him.

Krishna is called Giridhari, "the one who holds the mountain", because of this story. The festival honours his protection and thanks the land that feeds us.

Making Govardhan and Annakut in a British home

Traditionally, families in northern India shape Govardhan from cow dung, decorate it and walk around it. In a UK flat or terraced house, cow dung is not available or appropriate, and a wet garden in November is no place for a puja. Families here use:

  • A dough Govardhan: a small hill of chapati dough on a large plate, decorated with flowers, toy cows and a Krishna murti on top.
  • A rice mountain: cooked rice heaped high in the centre of the Annakut thali.
  • A sweet hill: pendas, barfi or laddus piled into a cone.
  • Rangoli: Govardhan drawn with coloured powder on a board by the front door.

Then lay out the Annakut: a mixed vegetable sabzi, kadhi, dal, rice, puris, farsan and sweets. Many Gujarati families add mathiya and chorafali left from Diwali. Offer it all to Krishna, perform aarti, walk around the Govardhan seven times if space allows, and share the food.

Annakut at UK mandirs

Many mandirs in the UK hold an Annakut darshan, with tiers of vegetarian dishes arranged before the deities. Arrangements differ from temple to temple: some open on the day itself, others on the nearest weekend, and large temples can be very busy. We have not listed specific events. Check your mandir's website or newsletter for its plans. Public transport and parking near big temples fill up quickly at this time, so plan ahead.

Gujarati New Year, Bali Pratipada and Padwa

For the UK's large Gujarati community, the day after Diwali is Bestu Varas, the Gujarati New Year. People wear new clothes, visit elders and greet each other with "Saal Mubarak". In Maharashtrian homes it is Diwali Padwa, and in Karnataka Bali Pratipada, which welcomes King Mahabali. In India these fall on Tuesday 10 November 2026. Check your mandir or Gujarati calendar for the date it uses in the UK.

Practical tips for a UK Monday

  • Prepare the dough hill and some dishes on Sunday, after the Lakshmi Puja.
  • Keep diyas on a metal tray indoors and away from smoke alarms; use electric lights in windows.
  • Pack Annakut prasad in small boxes for neighbours, colleagues or your child's teacher.
  • If Monday is too rushed, keep a short puja at home and attend a temple Annakut at the weekend.

Frequently asked questions

What is the date of Govardhan Puja 2026 in the UK?

Drik Panchang gives Monday 9 November 2026 for the UK. In India it is Tuesday 10 November.

Why does the UK observe Govardhan Puja before India?

The day is fixed by Kartika Shukla Pratipada at the local morning. The UK's morning comes hours after India's, and in 2026 that is enough to place the deciding morning on Monday in the UK and on Tuesday in India.

Is there a Govardhan Puja muhurat for London?

We do not give a clock time. Check Drik Panchang with your town selected. India's muhurat does not apply in the UK.

What is Annakut?

Annakut means "mountain of food". Devotees prepare many vegetarian dishes and offer them to Krishna, recalling the offering made to Govardhan Hill. The food is then shared as prasad.

When is Bestu Varas, the Gujarati New Year, in 2026?

In India it is Tuesday 10 November 2026, the same day as Bali Pratipada. It is linked to the same Pratipada as Govardhan Puja, so check your mandir or Gujarati calendar for the UK date.

Can children take part in Govardhan Puja at home?

Yes. Shaping a small dough Govardhan with toy cows and trees is a fun, hands-on way to teach the story after school.
