Quick answer: Ksheerabdi Dwadashi 2026 Canada is on Saturday 21 November 2026, the day Telugu families keep Chilukuri Dwadashi and many Hindu homes celebrate Tulasi Vivah. Devutthana Ekadashi is the day before, on Friday 20 November.
These are Drik Panchang dates for Canada and they hold in every Canadian city we checked, from Halifax to Vancouver. They are the same as India's dates this year. The real Canadian challenge is not the date but the weather: by late November your tulasi needs to be safe indoors.

Source: Drik Panchang for Canada. Karthika Masam started one day earlier in Canada than in India, which gives Canada five Karthika Somavarams this year, but the Ekadashi and Dwadashi match India. The Dwadashi weekend leads straight into Vaikuntha Chaturdashi, Karthigai Deepam and Karthika Pournami, so it is a busy four days.
Why the Dwadashi matters
Ksheerabdi Dwadashi is the twelfth day of the bright fortnight of Karthika. The name comes from "ksheera abdhi", the ocean of milk. As commonly told, the churning of that ocean began on this day; hence the Telugu name Chilukuri Dwadashi, from the verb for churning.
The other popular belief is that Vishnu, newly awake after Devutthana Ekadashi, comes with Lakshmi to the tulasi grove on Dwadashi. So the tulasi plant is worshipped with a branch of amla (usiri), Vishnu's symbol, in the Tulasi-Damodara puja. In the Tulasi Vivah tradition, Tulasi, the devoted Vrinda of the legend as commonly told, is ceremonially married to Vishnu as Shaligram or Krishna, and the wedding season begins.
A simple home puja for Canadian families
- Set up indoors: place the tulasi pot on a tray in your puja room or living room. Lay a clean cloth and draw a small rangoli on a board or paper.
- Decorate: apply turmeric and kumkum to the pot and tie a red thread or small cloth around it.
- Amla and Vishnu: set an amla branch in the pot if you have one; otherwise use fresh or frozen amla fruit. Place a Shaligram, Krishna idol or Vishnu picture beside it.
- Sankalpa: pray to Ganesha first, then make a short resolution for the family.
- Offerings: flowers, fruit, jaggery, a simple sweet, and a few tulasi leaves picked on Thursday, since many families do not pluck tulasi on Ekadashi or Dwadashi.
- Lamps and aarti: light lamps around the plant, chant "Om Namo Narayanaya", do aarti and go around the plant three times.
If you fasted on Friday for Devutthana Ekadashi, break the fast on Saturday morning. Check Drik Panchang for the parana window in your city.

Keeping tulasi alive in a Canadian winter
Tulasi comes from the tropics. Frost kills it outright, and it struggles whenever it is cooler than about 10°C. Canadian homes add two more problems: very dry air from forced-air heating and very short days.
- Bring it in early: by late November it should have been indoors for weeks. Next year, bring it in when autumn nights first dip below about 10°C.
- Light first: a south-facing window is best. An inexpensive LED grow light for 10 to 12 hours a day is the single biggest help through December and January.
- Beware cold glass and drafts: on nights of minus 10°C or colder, leaves touching a window can freeze. Pull the pot back at night, and keep it away from doors that open to the cold.
- Humidity: furnace heat dries the leaves. Stand the pot on a tray of pebbles with a little water, or keep it near a humidifier, but not on a heating vent.
- Water lightly: water only when the top inch of soil is dry; let the pot drain fully.
Tulasi often looks tired by February. Keep pinching off flower spikes and it usually recovers when spring light returns.
Practical tips
- Saturday is a weekend, so this is a good year to gather family for an evening puja.
- Condos and rental apartments often have strict rules about open flames and sensitive smoke detectors. Use LED diyas if needed.
- If you visit a temple for a Tulasi Vivah ceremony, check its website for its own date and schedule, and allow extra time for winter roads.
- If you post photos for family in India, remember that India is many hours ahead, so your Saturday-evening puja is already early Sunday morning there.

Frequently asked questions
What is the Ksheerabdi Dwadashi 2026 date in Canada?
Drik Panchang gives Saturday 21 November 2026 for Canada, with Devutthana Ekadashi on Friday 20 November. All nine Canadian cities we checked, from Halifax to Vancouver, have the same dates.
Is the Canadian date different from India?
No. India also keeps Devutthana Ekadashi on Friday 20 November and Ksheerabdi Dwadashi on Saturday 21 November 2026. Clock times differ, so always use your local Canadian times.
What is the difference between Tulasi Vivah and Chilukuri Dwadashi?
Both honour Tulasi and Vishnu in the same part of Karthika. Telugu families call the Dwadashi Ksheerabdi or Chilukuri Dwadashi and worship tulasi with an amla branch. Tulasi Vivah, popular in North and West Indian families, is a symbolic wedding of Tulasi to Vishnu, and some communities hold it on the Ekadashi instead.
When should we light the lamps?
Traditionally after sunset. In late November that is roughly 4:15 PM in Montreal and about 5:40 PM in Calgary. We do not give a clock muhurat.
Can tulasi survive a Canadian winter?
Only indoors. Keep it at the brightest window, away from cold drafts and heating vents, water it sparingly and add a grow light if you can.
Can we still do the puja without a live plant?
Yes. A picture of Tulasi Devi with a few dried leaves, an amla fruit and a lamp is a sincere offering. Many Canadian families do exactly this.
