Quick answer: Ksheerabdi Dwadashi 2026 USA falls on Saturday 21 November 2026, the day of the Tulasi Vivah and Chilukuri Dwadashi puja. Devutthana (Prabodhini) Ekadashi, when Lord Vishnu is said to wake from his four-month sleep, is the day before, on Friday 20 November.
These are Drik Panchang dates for the USA, and they are the same in every US time zone. They also match India, where the Dwadashi is on Saturday 21 November too. For once, the US date and the India date line up exactly, and it falls on a weekend.

Source: Drik Panchang for the USA. Karthika Masam began in the USA on Monday 9 November, one day earlier than India. Thanksgiving falls on Thursday 26 November, so the Dwadashi weekend comes just before the busiest travel week of the year. If you are flying out, keep the puja at home on Saturday and pack your diya kit for the week.
What is Ksheerabdi Dwadashi?
Ksheerabdi Dwadashi is the twelfth day of the bright fortnight of Karthika. "Ksheera abdhi" means the ocean of milk. As commonly told, this is the day the devas and asuras began churning the ocean of milk, which is why Telugu homes also call it Chilukuri Dwadashi (from "chilukuta", to churn).
Another popular belief is that Vishnu, having woken on Ekadashi, comes with Lakshmi to the Brindavanam, the tulasi grove, on Dwadashi. So the family worships the tulasi plant together with an amla (usiri) branch, which stands for Vishnu. This is the Tulasi-Damodara puja; Damodara is a name of Krishna and Karthika is often called Damodara Masam.
In much of North and West India, the same season is celebrated as Tulasi Vivah: the ceremonial marriage of Tulasi to Vishnu as Shaligram or Krishna. As the story is commonly told, Tulasi was once the devoted Vrinda, and Vishnu promised to marry her in her plant form. Tulasi Vivah also marks the start of the Hindu wedding season.
Simple Tulasi Vivah and Ksheerabdi puja at home
- Prepare the plant: wipe the pot, add a little fresh soil, and draw a small rangoli or muggu in front of it. Many families decorate the pot with turmeric and kumkum.
- Amla branch: place a small amla branch in the pot beside the tulasi. If you cannot find one, set a few fresh or frozen amla fruits on a plate beside it.
- Vishnu: keep a Shaligram, a Krishna idol or a picture of Vishnu next to the plant.
- Sankalpa and Ganesha: begin with a short prayer to Ganesha and a resolution for the family's well-being.
- Offerings: offer flowers, a little cloth or thread, turmeric and kumkum, and fruit, jaggery or a simple sweet as naivedyam.
- Lamps: light ghee or oil lamps around the plant. Many Telugu families light many lamps on this day, and some light the 365-wick lamp on Dwadashi or on Karthika Pournami.
- Chant and aarti: chant "Om Namo Narayanaya" or the Vishnu Sahasranama if you know it, do aarti, walk around the plant three times, and share prasadam.
Many families avoid plucking tulasi leaves on Ekadashi and Dwadashi. If you need leaves for the offering, pick them on Thursday.
Lamp time: when it gets dark in US cities
The main lamps are traditionally lit after sunset. Drik Panchang gives these sunset times for Monday 23 November, two days after the Dwadashi; on Saturday 21 November sunset will be within a minute or two of these.
| City | Sunset Mon 23 Nov 2026 (local time) |
|---|---|
| New York | 4:32 PM |
| Edison, NJ | 4:34 PM |
| Washington DC | 4:49 PM |
| Atlanta | 5:30 PM |
| Chicago | 4:24 PM |
| Dallas | 5:22 PM |
| Houston | 5:22 PM |
| Denver | 4:39 PM |
| Phoenix | 5:21 PM |
| Los Angeles | 4:45 PM |
| San Jose / Bay Area | 4:52 PM |
| Seattle | 4:24 PM |
This is not a muhurat, just a guide to when the evening begins. In Seattle and Chicago the lamps can be lit before 4:30 PM, which leaves the whole evening free on a Saturday.
Keeping a tulasi plant alive through an American winter
Tulasi (holy basil) is a tropical plant. It does not survive frost and sulks below about 50°F (10°C). By late November most of the country is far colder than that at night.
- North-East, Midwest, Mountain states and the Pacific North-West: the plant must be indoors. Keep it at a bright south- or west-facing window, away from cold glass at night and away from heating vents that dry it out.
- Low light: short days are the bigger problem than cold. A small LED grow light for 10 to 12 hours a day keeps many NRI tulasi plants going until spring.
- Water less: indoors in winter, water only when the top inch of soil is dry. Root rot from overwatering kills more winter tulasi than cold does.
- Texas, Florida, Arizona and Southern California: the plant may still sit outside on mild days, but bring it in or cover it on nights that turn cold.
- Pinch the flowers: pinching off seed spikes keeps the plant leafy through winter.
If you have no plant, Indian grocery stores in many US cities sell holy basil seedlings in summer and sometimes dried leaves year-round. Plan ahead for next year.
Tips for American families
- Because Saturday 21 November is a weekend, this is a good year to invite neighbours or friends for an evening Tulasi puja and prasadam.
- Apartment smoke alarms are sensitive. Keep lamps away from curtains and sprinklers, or use LED diyas indoors.
- If your community celebrates Tulasi Vivah with a full wedding-style ceremony, check your local temple's website for its own schedule; dates and timings vary.
- Children enjoy decorating the pot and carrying the lamp around the plant, which is an easy way to pass on the tradition.

Frequently asked questions
What is the date of Ksheerabdi Dwadashi 2026 in the USA?
Drik Panchang gives Saturday 21 November 2026 for the USA, with Devutthana (Prabodhini) Ekadashi on Friday 20 November. The date is the same in all the US cities we checked, from New York to Seattle.
Is the US date the same as India?
Yes. India also observes Devutthana Ekadashi on Friday 20 November and Ksheerabdi Dwadashi on Saturday 21 November 2026. Only the clock times differ, so use local US times and do not convert India's times.
Is Tulasi Vivah the same as Ksheerabdi Dwadashi?
They are closely linked. Telugu and Kannada families call the day Ksheerabdi Dwadashi or Chilukuri Dwadashi and worship tulasi with an amla branch. In many North Indian homes the same season is marked as Tulasi Vivah, the ceremonial marriage of Tulasi to Vishnu. Some communities hold Tulasi Vivah on the Ekadashi instead, so follow your family custom.
What time should I do the puja?
We do not give a clock muhurat. Traditionally the main puja and lamps are done in the evening, after sunset. In the USA that is roughly 4:30 to 5:30 PM in late November, depending on your city.
My tulasi died in the cold. Can I still do the puja?
Yes. Use a fresh holy basil plant from an Indian grocery store or nursery if you can find one, or worship a picture of Tulasi with a few leaves. Devotion is what matters.
Can I break the Ekadashi fast on Dwadashi?
Yes. Many devotees fast on Devutthana Ekadashi (Friday 20 November) and break the fast on Saturday morning. Check Drik Panchang for the parana time in your city.
