How the Lakshmi Puja muhurat is worked out
The Diwali muhurat is not one fixed time for all of India. It is built from two parts:
- Pradosh Kaal: the period that starts at sunset and lasts about one-fifth of the night. In Indian cities in November this is roughly two and a half hours. Lakshmi Puja on Amavasya is done in Pradosh Kaal.
- Sthir lagna (fixed ascendant): the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon changes about every two hours. Vrishabha (Taurus) is a "fixed" (sthir) sign. Tradition says that when Lakshmi is worshipped in a fixed lagna, her blessing stays (is "fixed") in the home.
- The muhurat: the time when Vrishabha lagna is rising inside Pradosh Kaal. That overlap is the Lakshmi Puja muhurat in the table.
The Dhanteras puja muhurat on Friday 6 November is found in the same way: Pradosh Kaal on Trayodashi, together with Vrishabha lagna. Because sunset and the lagna both depend on location, two cities with the same clock time (IST) can still have different windows.
Step-by-step home Lakshmi-Ganesha puja
This is a short summary. Families follow many regional customs, so adapt it to your tradition. For the full method with mantras, see our Lakshmi Puja Vidhi 2026 guide.
- 1. Prepare the home: clean the house in the days before Diwali. On the day, draw a rangoli at the entrance and place diyas at the door.
- 2. Set up the altar: cover a low wooden stool (chowki) with a red or yellow cloth. Place images or idols of Lakshmi and Ganesha on it. Many families also keep a kalash (water pot) with mango leaves and a coconut.
- 3. Bathe and dress: bathe and wear clean or new clothes before the muhurat begins.
- 4. Sankalpa: inside the muhurat, light the main lamp and make a short sankalpa (intention) with water, rice and flowers in your hand.
- 5. Ganesha first: worship Ganesha first with flowers, kumkum, rice and a sweet, so the puja goes without obstacles.
- 6. Lakshmi puja: offer Lakshmi flowers (a lotus if you can find one), kumkum, turmeric, rice, sweets and fruits. Many families also place coins, jewellery or account books before her. Chant a simple mantra such as "Om Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah".
- 7. Aarti: sing the Lakshmi aarti and Ganesha aarti, then offer the lamp to every member of the family.
- 8. Lamps everywhere: after the puja, light diyas in every room, at windows and at the main door. Share prasad with family and neighbours.
Tips for families in India and NRIs calling home
- Diwali falls on a Sunday in 2026, so many working families can do the full puja at home on the day itself.
- Start your preparations before sunset. Keep the main worship and aarti inside the muhurat for your city.
- Traffic and markets are very busy in the days before Diwali. Buy puja items and sweets early, especially for Dhanteras on Friday 6 November.
- Follow local rules on firecrackers. Many cities limit the type of crackers or the hours when they can be used. Consider a cracker-free Diwali with lamps and rangoli.
- If you live abroad, do not use these India times. Lakshmi Puja is tied to local sunset, so use the muhurat for your own city. See our city-wise pages for other countries in the related guides below.
