What the Dwadashi means
Ksheerabdi Dwadashi is the twelfth day of the bright half of Karthika. "Ksheerabdi" refers to the ocean of milk. As commonly told, the churning of that ocean began on this day, and the Telugu name Chilukuri Dwadashi comes from the word for churning.
A second belief is that Vishnu, awakened on Devutthana Ekadashi after four months of yoga-nidra, comes with Lakshmi to the tulasi grove on Dwadashi. Families therefore worship tulasi together with a branch of amla (usiri), Vishnu's symbol, in the Tulasi-Damodara puja. Gujarati, Punjabi and other North Indian families across Europe know the season as Tulasi Vivah, the symbolic wedding of Tulasi, the devoted Vrinda of the legend as commonly told, to Vishnu as Shaligram or Krishna. Some hold it on the Ekadashi; follow your own custom.
A Tulasi puja for a European apartment
- Set up: move the tulasi pot from the windowsill to a tray in your puja corner. Draw a small rangoli on a board or paper.
- Decorate: turmeric and kumkum on the pot, a red thread, flowers and a small cloth.
- Amla: fresh amla branches are rare in Europe. Fresh or frozen amla from an Asian or Indian grocer, placed beside the plant, is a perfectly good substitute. Add a Shaligram, Krishna idol or Vishnu picture.
- Sankalpa: a short Ganesha prayer and a simple family resolution.
- Offer: fruit, jaggery and a simple sweet. Many families avoid plucking tulasi leaves on Ekadashi and Dwadashi, so pick any you need on Thursday.
- Lamps and aarti: after sunset, light lamps around the plant, chant "Om Namo Narayanaya", do aarti and go around the tulasi three times.
If you fasted on Friday, break the fast on Saturday morning. Drik Panchang gives the parana window for your city.
Sunset across Europe
Calculated sunset times for Monday 23 November 2026, local time. Saturday 21 November will be a few minutes later, most noticeably in the far north.
| City | Sunset Mon 23 Nov | City | Sunset Mon 23 Nov |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stockholm | 3:10 PM | Brussels | 4:48 PM |
| Oslo | 3:35 PM | Zurich | 4:44 PM |
| Helsinki | 3:36 PM | Rome | 4:44 PM |
| Warsaw | 3:36 PM | Milan | 4:47 PM |
| Copenhagen | 3:53 PM | Amsterdam | 4:39 PM |
| Berlin | 4:05 PM | The Hague | 4:43 PM |
| Vienna | 4:10 PM | Paris | 5:03 PM |
| Hamburg | 4:14 PM | Lisbon | 5:19 PM |
| Dublin | 4:20 PM | Barcelona | 5:27 PM |
| Munich | 4:29 PM | Madrid | 5:53 PM |
| Frankfurt | 4:33 PM |
This is when evening begins, not a muhurat. Families in Stockholm, Oslo and Helsinki can light their lamps in mid-afternoon, while in Madrid the lamps come close to 6 PM because Spain keeps Central European Time far to the west.
Keeping tulasi alive through a European winter
Tulasi is a tropical plant, and almost everywhere in Europe it must spend November indoors. What changes from north to south is how hard the winter is on it.
- Scandinavia, Finland, the Baltic and Poland: with daylight down to a few hours, light is the real problem. An LED grow light for 10 to 12 hours a day is close to essential until February.
- Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria and Switzerland: a bright south-facing window plus a grow light on dull days. Keep the pot off the radiator shelf and away from cold glass at night.
- Ireland and the Atlantic coast: winters are milder but grey and damp. Indoors, avoid overwatering in the low light.
- Spain, Portugal and Italy: days are brighter, but nights still turn cold. A sunny balcony may work on warm afternoons; bring the plant in each evening, and indoors for the winter.
- Everywhere: water only when the top of the soil is dry, and pinch off flower spikes to keep the plant leafy.
Fresh holy basil plants are hard to find in much of Europe. Many families grow tulasi from seed in spring. A picture of Tulasi Devi with a few dried leaves is a sincere substitute for this year's puja.
Practical tips
- Old European apartment blocks often have wooden floors and strict landlord rules on open flames. Place lamps on a metal tray, or use LED diyas.
- Saturday 21 November is a weekend day across Europe, so families who live far from a temple can still gather at home.
- If your local temple or community association holds a Tulasi Vivah, check its website for the date it has chosen and its timings.
- Europe is three and a half to five and a half hours behind India in November, so an afternoon or early-evening puja in Europe falls in India's evening.

Frequently asked questions
When is Ksheerabdi Dwadashi 2026 in Europe?
By our calculation, Saturday 21 November 2026 in all 21 European cities we checked, with Devutthana Ekadashi on Friday 20 November. The dates are calculated by HinduTone using the Drik Panchang method; please confirm them on Drik Panchang for your city.
Is the European date the same as India's?
Yes. Drik Panchang for India gives Devutthana Ekadashi on Friday 20 November and Ksheerabdi Dwadashi on Saturday 21 November 2026, the same days as our European calculation. Use local European times, not India's.
When should I light the lamps?
Traditionally after sunset. That ranges widely across Europe: around 3:10 PM in Stockholm but nearly 6 PM in Madrid, by our calculation for 23 November. We do not give a clock muhurat.
How do I keep tulasi alive in a northern European winter?
Keep it indoors at the brightest window, away from radiators and cold glass, water sparingly and use a small LED grow light. Light, not warmth, is the main problem in Scandinavia, the Baltic and Germany.
Is Tulasi Vivah the same as Chilukuri Dwadashi?
They belong to the same days. Telugu families call the Dwadashi Ksheerabdi or Chilukuri Dwadashi and worship tulasi with an amla branch; North Indian families celebrate Tulasi Vivah, a symbolic wedding of Tulasi and Vishnu, which some hold on the Ekadashi. Follow your family custom.
I live in the UK. Is this guide for me?
The UK has its own Drik Panchang dates and sunset times in our separate UK guide, linked below. The Dwadashi is also on Saturday 21 November there.
