Quick answer
Vaikuntha Ekadashi 2026 in Germany: Sunday 20 December 2026. The fast is kept on Sunday across the whole country (Berlin, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Munich, Cologne, Stuttgart and everywhere else share one time zone). Parana, the breaking of the fast, is on Dwadashi morning, Monday 21 December. Check the exact parana window for your city on Drik Panchang.
Vaikuntha Ekadashi, also called Mukkoti Ekadashi or Swarga Vathil Ekadashi, is the most celebrated of the 24 Ekadashis in the year. In the north Indian calendar the same day is Mokshada Ekadashi, and it is also Gita Jayanti, the day the Bhagavad Gita is remembered. For a full overview of the festival and the Tirumala and Srirangam celebrations, see our main Vaikuntha Ekadashi 2026 guide.
Unlike last year, when the observance fell at the very end of December, the 2026 fast falls on a Sunday before Christmas, which makes it easier for families in Germany to keep the full day and the night vigil.

Germany follows Central European Time in December, which is four and a half hours behind India. That difference matters only for the parana window and the start and end of the tithi; the fasting day itself is the same Sunday as in India. If you are also preparing for the earlier fast, our Utpanna Ekadashi 2026 guide covers 4 December, and Karthika Masam 2026 explains the month that closes just before.
Why Vaikuntha Ekadashi matters
Vaikuntha Ekadashi falls on the Shukla Paksha Ekadashi in the solar month of Dhanurmasa (Margazhi in Tamil). Devotees believe the gates of Vaikuntha, Lord Vishnu's eternal abode, open on this day. That is why South Indian Vishnu temples open a special northern doorway, the Vaikunta Dwaram at Tirumala and the Paramapada Vasal at Srirangam, and devotees walk through it as a symbol of passing into the Lord's presence.
- The Padma Purana praises it as the Ekadashi that grants moksha to sincere devotees.
- Tradition holds that fasting on this one day brings the merit of observing all the Ekadashis of the year.
- It is also Gita Jayanti, so many families read or recite the Bhagavad Gita on this day.
- Devotees pray for inner purification, peace in the family and the grace of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi.
The story behind Ekadashi
The Padma Purana tells how the demon Mura troubled the devas. Lord Vishnu fought him for a long time and then rested in a cave. When Mura tried to attack the sleeping Lord, a radiant goddess emerged from Vishnu's body and destroyed the demon. Pleased, Vishnu named her Ekadashi and blessed her: whoever fasts on her day with devotion would be freed from sin and reach Vaikuntha.
A second story often told on this day is that of King Ambarisha, a great devotee who kept Ekadashi faithfully. When the sage Durvasa, angered by a delay at parana, sent a demon against him, Vishnu's Sudarshana chakra protected the king. The lesson families draw from it is simple: keep the vow with humility and break the fast on time.
Fasting rules for Hindus in Germany
The fast runs from sunrise on Ekadashi to the parana window on Dwadashi morning. Choose a level that suits your health; elderly devotees, children, pregnant women and anyone on medication should keep a light fruit-and-milk fast or consult a doctor.
- Avoid: rice, wheat and all grains, lentils, beans, onion and garlic.
Commonly allowed foods are easy to find in German supermarkets and Indian shops:
- Fruits, milk, yogurt (Joghurt or Quark), paneer and nuts
- Potatoes, sweet potatoes, pumpkin and other root vegetables
- Sabudana (sago, available in Asian shops) and buckwheat flour (Buchweizenmehl)
- Rock salt (sendha namak) instead of ordinary salt
Nirjala (without water) is kept only by experienced devotees in good health. Winter in Germany is cold and dry indoors, so drink enough water if you are on a partial fast. For simple fast-friendly dishes, see our Ekadashi fasting recipes guide.
How to observe Vaikuntha Ekadashi at home
Most Hindus in Germany live far from a Vishnu temple, so the home puja is the heart of the day. A simple, sincere observance is entirely in keeping with tradition.
- On Dashami (Saturday 19 December), eat one light sattvic meal and avoid grains in the evening.
- On Sunday 20 December, wake early, bathe and wear clean clothes.
- Take a sankalpa (resolve) to keep the vrat for the pleasure of Lord Vishnu.
- Clean the altar and place an image of Vishnu, Venkateswara, Krishna or Rama.
- Offer tulsi leaves (picked the day before, as tulsi is not plucked on Ekadashi), flowers, fruit, milk, incense and a ghee lamp.
- Chant Om Namo Narayanaya, the Vishnu Sahasranama or the Hare Krishna mahamantra.
- Read a chapter of the Bhagavad Gita, especially fitting because it is Gita Jayanti.
- Keep jagaran in the evening with bhajans, kirtan and stories of Vishnu, for as long as your health allows.
- On Monday 21 December, break the fast within your city's parana window with a simple meal, and offer food or a donation if you can.
Many families also prepare Gita Jayanti prasad; our Gita Jayanti 2026 guide has tulsi-based sweets and offerings you can make at home.
Mantras and stotras for the day
- Om Namo Narayanaya - the eight-syllable mantra, chanted 108 times or more.
- Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya - the twelve-syllable mantra.
- Vishnu Sahasranama - the thousand names of Vishnu, ideal for group recitation.
- Hare Krishna mahamantra - chanted in ISKCON communities.
- Bhajans - Achyutam Keshavam, Govinda Bolo Hari Gopal Bolo, and Tamil and Telugu songs to Venkateswara and Ranganatha.
Temples and community programmes in Germany
Germany has a growing and varied Hindu community, with people from India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Afghanistan, Mauritius and elsewhere. Most live in and around Berlin, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Munich, Cologne, Düsseldorf and Stuttgart. There are only a few traditional South Indian Vishnu temples, so how you celebrate depends on where you live.
- ISKCON centres: ISKCON communities in several German cities, including Berlin, Munich and Cologne, usually mark Ekadashi with kirtan, a class and Ekadashi prasadam. Because the date is a Sunday in 2026, many will hold their regular Sunday programme with an Ekadashi focus.
- Sri Lankan Tamil temples: Germany has many Tamil Hindu temples, especially in North Rhine-Westphalia. Several have Vishnu or Perumal shrines and may hold special pujas for Vaikuntha Ekadashi.
- Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayali associations: South Indian community associations in the larger cities sometimes arrange a group Vishnu Sahasranama recitation or bhajan evening on the weekend of Mukkoti Ekadashi.
Programmes and timings change each year, so check your temple's website, newsletter or community WhatsApp group in early December. If there is nothing near you, a home puja joined by an online Vishnu Sahasranama or a live stream from India is a perfectly good way to keep the day.
Parana: breaking the fast correctly
Parana is done on Dwadashi morning, Monday 21 December 2026, after sunrise and before Dwadashi ends. Traditional guidance is to avoid Hari Vasara, the first quarter of Dwadashi, and to break the fast in the morning window. Because sunrise in December varies noticeably between Munich in the south and Hamburg in the north, look up the parana window for your own city on Drik Panchang rather than relying on a national time. If your temple follows a specific calendar, follow its guidance.
Break the fast gently with a little water or fruit, followed by a light meal with rice or grains. Many devotees first offer the meal to Vishnu and share it as prasad.
Benefits of keeping the vrat
- Believed to grant moksha and entry to Vaikuntha
- Cleanses sins accumulated over lifetimes, according to tradition
- Builds discipline, focus and a calm mind
- Brings the family together around prayer during the winter holidays
Frequently asked questions
When is Vaikuntha Ekadashi 2026 in Germany?
Vaikuntha Ekadashi 2026 is observed across Germany on Sunday 20 December 2026, the same day as in India. It is Margashirsha Shukla Ekadashi, also called Mokshada Ekadashi, and coincides with Gita Jayanti.
Is the date different in Berlin, Munich or Hamburg?
No. All of Germany is in one time zone (CET in December), so the fasting day is Sunday 20 December everywhere. Only the parana window on Monday 21 December shifts slightly with local sunrise, so check it for your own city on Drik Panchang.
When should I break the Vaikuntha Ekadashi fast in Germany?
Parana is done on Dwadashi morning, Monday 21 December 2026, within the parana window for your city. We do not publish times because they depend on local sunrise; look up your city on Drik Panchang or ask your temple.
What can I eat during the Vaikuntha Ekadashi fast?
Grains, rice, wheat, lentils and beans are avoided, along with onion and garlic. Fruits, milk, yogurt, nuts, potatoes, sabudana and buckwheat (kuttu, widely sold in Germany as Buchweizen) with rock salt are commonly allowed. Many devotees keep a fruit-and-milk fast; nirjala is only for those in good health.
Can I observe Vaikuntha Ekadashi on a Sunday if I work the next day?
Yes, and 2026 is easier than most years because the fast falls on a Sunday. Keep the night vigil as long as your health allows, break the fast on Monday morning within the parana window, and eat lightly before work.
