Devi (Chamundeshwari) temple · Chamundi Hill, Mysuru, Mysuru, Karnataka, India
Sri Chamundeshwari Temple stands on Chamundi Hill, about 13 km from Mysuru in Karnataka, and is dedicated to the Goddess Chamundeshwari, a fierce form of Durga. Karnataka Tourism describes it as a spiritual and cultural symbol of Mysuru, and the Goddess is the tutelary deity of the Mysore royal family, as the Times of India notes.
Faith & Tradition
According to legend, the Goddess vanquished the demon Mahishasura here, earning the name Mahishasura Mardini, and the city of Mysuru takes its name from this tale, Karnataka Tourism explains. The temple is regarded by many as a Shakti Peetha (the Times of India describes it as one of the eighteen Maha Shakti Peethas), though traditional lists of Shakti Peethas differ.
During Mysuru Dasara, an image of Goddess Chamundeshwari is carried in the Jumboo Savari procession on a golden howdah of about 750 kg, after being worshipped by the royal couple, the Times of India reports.
Heritage
The temple was once small and grew over the centuries with the support of the Mysore Maharajas. In earlier times animal and human sacrifices were made here, a practice that was stopped in the 18th century, according to the Times of India.
