Devi (Chottanikkara Bhagavathy) temple · Chottanikkara, Kochi, Ernakulam, Kerala, India
Chottanikkara Bhagavathy Temple is a Hindu temple to the goddess Bhagavathy at Chottanikkara, on the outskirts of Kochi in Ernakulam district, Kerala. It is one of the most popular pilgrim centres in Kerala, according to Kerala Tourism, and is administered by the Cochin Devaswom Board, the Deccan Chronicle notes.
Faith & Tradition
The goddess is believed to have the power to cure mental illness, and many devotees visit for this reason (Kerala Tourism; Incredible India). The Keezhkkaavu Bhagavathy is worshipped as Bhadrakali in her fierce (ugra) form, and the evening Guruthi Pooja invoking Mahakali, once held only on Fridays, is now performed daily, Incredible India notes.
The temple is also a major short-stay worship centre on the Sabarimala pilgrimage route (Deccan Chronicle).
Heritage
Kerala Tourism dates the temple to the 10th century CE; a legend recounted by Incredible India credits its establishment to Adi Shankaracharya, and the temple was renovated over the centuries, including under the Kochi royal family.
In November 2020 a devotee offered a large donation for development of the temple and the temple town, with proposals including two gopurams and modernisation of the Navarathri mandapam, the Deccan Chronicle reported.
