Paramekkavu Bhagavathi Temple is a Hindu temple to the goddess Bhagavathi in Thrissur, Kerala. Along with Thiruvambady, it is one of the two major participants in the Thrissur Pooram, and is run by the Paramekkavu Devaswom (New Indian Express; Onmanorama).

Religious Significance of Paramekkavu Bhagavathi Temple, Thrissur

At Thrissur Pooram, the Elanjithara Melam for Paramekkavu Bhagavathy is performed inside the Sree Vadakkumnathan temple courtyard, beside the ilanji tree; the New Indian Express describes it as among the world's largest percussion ensembles, with more than 250 artists. The pooram also features the Paramekkavu and Thiruvambady devaswoms competing in their fireworks displays (New Indian Express; Onmanorama).

The temple's own Vela festival, held in January, includes a fireworks display; in 2017 it was conducted with low-decibel fireworks under a High Court order, the Times of India reported. Desapattu festivals of the desams attached to the temple precede it (Times of India).

History of Paramekkavu Bhagavathi Temple, Thrissur

The percussionist Peruvanam Kuttan Marar led the Elanjithara Melam for Paramekkavu for 24 years until the Devaswom replaced him in January 2023, Onmanorama reported. The temple's elephants have long been part of the pooram; tusker Paramekkavu Rajendran, which took part in the most Thrissur Poorams, died in 2019 (New Indian Express).
