Shiva (Brahmapureeswarar / Sattainathar) temple · Sirkazhi, Mayiladuthurai, Tamil Nadu, India
The Brahmapureeswarar Temple at Sirkazhi in Mayiladuthurai district, Tamil Nadu — also known as the Sri Sattainathar Swamy Temple and the Thoniappar Temple — is a Shiva temple administered by the Dharmapuram Adheenam (The Hindu). It is renowned as the place associated with the child saint Thirugnanasambandar, one of the Tevaram poets (Dinamalar).
Faith & Tradition
By tradition, the goddess Uma fed the infant Thirugnanasambandar with milk on the steps of the temple tank; this event is re-enacted on the second day of the Brahmotsavam, and the milk is offered as prasadam (Dinamalar). The temple was praised by Thirugnanasambandar, Manickavasagar and Arunagirinathar, among others.
The temple has a hill shrine to Uma Maheswarar, where oil abhishekam is offered on the first day of several Tamil months (Dinamalar).
Heritage
During renovation work in April 2023, 23 metal (panchaloha) idols and hundreds of copper plates inscribed with Tevaram hymns were unearthed near the west gopuram. It was the first discovery of Tevaram-inscribed copper plates in Tamil Nadu, and the State Department of Archaeology began studying them (The Hindu).
Kalasams were installed on the east rajagopuram in preparation (Dinamani), and the temple's Mahakumbabhishekam was held on 24 May 2023, the first in 32 years (The Hindu).
