Vaikuntha Ekadashi 2026 falls on Sunday 20 December across the UK and Ireland, the same day as in India. This guide covers the meaning of the day, fasting rules, a simple home puja, temple observances from London and Leicester to Glasgow, Belfast and Dublin, and how to break the fast correctly.
Quick answer: Vaikuntha Ekadashi 2026 in the UK and Ireland is on Sunday 20 December 2026, the same day as in India, according to Drik Panchang. The fast is broken (parana) on the Dwadashi morning that follows; check the exact parana window for your city on Drik Panchang, because sunrise varies considerably between southern England, Scotland and Ireland.
Vaikuntha Ekadashi, also called Mukkoti Ekadashi or Swarga Vathil Ekadashi, is the most important Ekadashi of the year for devotees of Lord Vishnu. It is believed that the gate of Vaikuntha, Vishnu's eternal abode, opens on this day, and that those who fast and remember the Lord with devotion move closer to moksha.
For Hindus in England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, the 2026 date is a gift: it falls on a Sunday, a few days before Christmas, so families can fast, visit the temple and keep the day without juggling work. Unlike last year, it does not fall in the week between Christmas and New Year.

Ireland observes Irish Standard Time in summer and GMT in winter, so in December Dublin and London share the same clock time. Even so, sunrise in Dublin, Belfast, Glasgow and Edinburgh is later than in London, which changes the parana window. Always use your own city on Drik Panchang rather than a London or India time.
What is Vaikuntha Ekadashi?
Vaikuntha Ekadashi is the Shukla Paksha (waxing moon) Ekadashi in the solar month of Dhanu, called Margazhi in Tamil. In 2026 it coincides with Margashirsha Shukla Ekadashi, known as Mokshada Ekadashi, "the Ekadashi that grants liberation", and with Gita Jayanti, the anniversary of the Bhagavad Gita.
According to the Padma Purana and other Vaishnava texts:
- The gate of Vaikuntha (Vaikunta Dwaram) symbolically opens on this day
- A sincere fast is said to carry the merit of all the Ekadashis of the year
- It is believed to wash away the sins of many lifetimes
- It brings the blessings of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi for inner peace and purity
The story of Goddess Ekadashi
The demon Mura once drove the devas from heaven. Lord Vishnu fought him and then withdrew to rest in a cave. When Mura crept in to strike the sleeping Lord, a radiant goddess emerged from Vishnu and destroyed him. Vishnu named her Ekadashi and promised that anyone who fasted on her day would be freed from sin.
King Ambarisha and the importance of parana
King Ambarisha was famous for keeping every Ekadashi. When the sage Durvasa delayed his arrival at the parana meal, Ambarisha sipped water to complete his vow on time. The enraged sage created a demon to attack him, but Vishnu's Sudarshana Chakra protected the king and humbled Durvasa. Devotees remember this story every time they break their fast at the right moment.
Tirumala and Srirangam
In India, the Tirumala Vaikunta Dwaram opens in the early hours of Vaikuntha Ekadashi and TTD keeps it open for ten days, while Srirangam opens its Paramapada Vasal on Vaikuntha Ekadashi. TTD has not yet announced the 2026 schedule or token system, so families planning to travel to India in December should wait for the official announcement. Our main Vaikuntha Ekadashi 2026 guide, linked below, covers Tirumala and Srirangam darshan in detail.
Fasting rules for British and Irish Hindus
The fast begins at sunrise on Ekadashi and ends at parana on Dwadashi morning. Choose the level that suits your health; sincerity matters more than severity.
- Nirjala: no food or water. For healthy, experienced adults only.
- Phalahari: fruits, milk, yogurt, nuts and water. The most common choice.
- Ekadashi meal: one or two simple grain-free meals, suitable for elders, children and anyone on medication.
Avoid
- Rice, wheat and all other grains
- Lentils, dals and beans
- Onion and garlic
- Meat, fish, eggs and alcohol
- Ready meals and snacks with hidden flour
Allowed
- Fruit, nuts, milk, yogurt and paneer
- Potatoes, sweet potatoes and sabudana
- Kuttu (buckwheat), singhara and rajgira flours, where your tradition allows them
- Makhana, coconut, peanuts and rock salt
Asian grocers in Wembley, Southall, Harrow, Leicester, Birmingham and Manchester, and Indian shops in Dublin, stock sabudana, kuttu atta and makhana. For recipes, see our Ekadashi fasting recipes guide.
Simple home puja
- Wake before sunrise, bathe and wear clean clothes
- Take a sankalpa for the Vaikuntha Ekadashi vrat before your home shrine
- Light a ghee lamp and offer tulsi leaves, flowers, fruit and milk to Lord Vishnu, Venkateswara, Krishna or Ranganatha
- Chant Om Namo Narayanaya or Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya 108 times
- Recite the Vishnu Sahasranama and, for Gita Jayanti, read a chapter of the Bhagavad Gita
- Offer fruit or milk as naivedya and perform aarti in the morning and evening
- Keep jagaran with bhajans and Vishnu stories as long as you are able
December nights in Britain and Ireland are long and dark, which suits an evening of bhajans by lamplight. If a full night vigil is not practical, extend your evening prayers and rise early for Dwadashi.
Temples and community observances
Many British and Irish Hindus keep Vaikuntha Ekadashi at home, and many visit their local temple for kirtan, discourses and prasadam. Bhaktivedanta Manor, ISKCON's temple near Watford, is the best-known Vaishnava centre in the UK, and ISKCON also has centres in Leicester, Birmingham, Manchester, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Dublin that observe Ekadashi with kirtan and Gita readings.
South Indian and Sri Lankan Tamil communities in London, the Midlands and the North celebrate Mukkoti Ekadashi at Venkateswara (Balaji) and Vishnu temples, often with special alankaram, Vishnu Sahasranama and Divya Prabandham recitation, and a decorated northern doorway for Vaikunta Dwaram darshan. Gujarati and Punjabi mandirs across the country also mark the day with satsang.
Each temple announces its own 2026 programme, usually in early December. Check the temple's website or social media before you travel, and allow for pre-Christmas traffic and winter weather.
Breaking the fast (parana)
Parana is done on Dwadashi morning, after sunrise and within the window your calendar gives, avoiding Hari Vasara, the first quarter of Dwadashi. Because sunrise differs from Cardiff to Aberdeen, check the window for your own city on Drik Panchang or ask your temple priest.
- Offer the first portion to the Lord before eating
- Start with water, tulsi water or fruit
- Follow with a light sattvic meal
- Give food or charity to someone in need
Tips for families in the UK and Ireland
- Plan fasting meals early in the week; shops get busy before Christmas
- Involve children with lamp lighting, tulsi offerings and the story of Mura
- Keep elders warm and hydrated, and choose a light fast for them
- If you must work, a fruit fast with morning and evening prayer is fully valid
- Note Utpanna Ekadashi on Friday 4 December 2026, two weeks earlier. See our Utpanna Ekadashi 2026 guide.
