The UK is lucky this year: the Telangana calendar and UK panchangs agree at both ends of the festival. Bathukamma begins on a Saturday and Saddula Bathukamma falls on a Sunday, the same day as Durga Ashtami, so many families can celebrate the first and last days without taking time off work. Mahalaya Amavasya on 10 October is also a day for remembering ancestors: see our Mahalaya Amavasya 2026 guide.

The nine days of Bathukamma

Bathukamma, the state festival of Telangana, honours Gauri (Gauramma). Women stack seasonal flowers in concentric rings into a cone, place a small Gauramma made of turmeric on top, and gather each evening to set their Bathukammas in a circle, clap and sing Bathukamma songs, then immerse the flowers in water. The festival begins on Mahalaya Amavasya and ends on Durgashtami with Saddula Bathukamma, the grandest day.

How Bathukamma is celebrated in the UK

As in Telangana, British Bathukamma is a women-led festival, but it has adapted to British weather, hall bookings and working weeks.

  • Flowers: tangedu and gunugu are hard to find in the UK, so families build Bathukammas from chrysanthemums, marigolds, carnations, celosia and roses from supermarkets, wholesale flower markets and Indian grocers. Buy a few days before the big weekend, and keep flowers cool so they last.
  • Indoors or out: mid-October evenings can be cold and wet, so many community celebrations are held in school halls or community centres in the afternoon, with the circle and songs indoors.
  • Immersion: most UK venues do not allow flowers in rivers, canals or park ponds. Organisers usually provide a tub or water trough and collect the flowers for composting. Follow their instructions and any council rules.
  • At home: many families keep a small daily Bathukamma on a plate at home through the week, with the evening songs over a video call with family in Telangana, and join a community event at the weekend.
  • Saddula day: the five rices are cooked and shared after the immersion; at community events they are often part of the evening meal.

TAUK's 2026 event is a Chenetha (handloom) Bathukamma, a theme that celebrates Telangana's handloom weaving traditions. Wearing a handloom saree or kurta is a good way to join in.

Dasara 2026 Vijay Muhurat across the UK

The Vijay Muhurat is the 11th of 15 daytime muhurtas, so it depends on your local sunrise and sunset. The table gives one or two reference cities for each of the UK's 12 regions and nations, all on Tuesday 20 October 2026. Timings were computed with a sunrise-to-sunset method and match Drik Panchang within about a minute; London's is Drik's published value.

Important: do not take India's Vijay Muhurat (1:59–2:45 PM IST) and convert it to UK time. The converted time falls in the morning in Britain and is not the right window here. Use your local afternoon window above, or the time your temple announces. Every UK window on 20 October falls inside Dashami.
