Telugu and Kannada families call it Dhanurmasam; Tamil families, including Canada's large Tamil community, call it Margazhi. It is the month of Andal's Tiruppavai, dawn worship of Vishnu, doorstep kolams and warm pongal, and it holds Vaikuntha Ekadashi.

India for comparison: Dhanu Sankranti is on Wednesday 16 December 2026 (morning, India time), and Makar Sankranti falls on the evening of Thursday 14 January 2027 in India, so Makar Sankranti / Thai Pongal there is usually observed on Friday 15 January 2027 (calculated; confirm on Drik Panchang). India's times are for India only; never convert them to Canadian time.
Counting day one: regional calendars differ on how they number the month. Tamil calendars, Telugu and Kannada Dhanurmasam practice and Vaishnava temple calendars each have their own rule for when the sankranti falls late in the day. Use the table to understand the astronomy, then follow your temple for day one and the last day of Tiruppavai recitation.
Why the last dawn differs: Makar Sankranti happens on Thursday morning across Canada. In Toronto and the East, Thursday's sunrise comes before the sankranti, so Thursday 14 January is still a Dhanurmasam dawn. In Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver, sunrise on Thursday comes after the sankranti, so the last Dhanurmasam dawn there is Wednesday 13 January. From November 2026, Alberta and British Columbia keep daylight time through winter, and our data's time zones reflect this, so sunrise in those cities is late on the clock.

- Vaikuntha Ekadashi: the most important day of the month for Vaishnavas, when Vishnu temples open the Vaikuntha dwaram. In Western Canada the Ekadashi tithi includes no local sunrise, which is why Smarta and Vaishnava dates differ. See Vaikuntha Ekadashi 2026 in Canada and Gita Jayanti 2026 in Canada.
- Dhanurmasa Pournami: the full moon of the month, which is also Datta Jayanti and Annapurna Jayanti. See Dhanurmasa Pournami 2026 and Datta Jayanti 2026 in Canada.
- Arudra Darshan: Shiva as Nataraja is worshipped on the Arudra (Thiruvathirai) nakshatra in Margazhi. Our Canadian data does not include this date, so please check Drik Panchang for your city or your temple's calendar. Background: Dhanurmasa Arudra 2026.
A daily Dhanurmasam routine for a Canadian winter
Traditionally, Dhanurmasam worship is done in the Brahma muhurta before dawn. Canadian winters make that both easier and harder: sunrise is late, so there is time before work, but it is dark, cold and often snowy. A simple routine that families can keep for the whole month:
- 1. Rise and light a lamp: a ghee or sesame-oil lamp before the family altar or an image of Vishnu, Krishna or Andal.
- 2. One Tiruppavai pasuram a day: Andal's Tiruppavai has 30 pasurams, traditionally recited one a day through Margazhi, opening with "Margazhi thingal". Read the day's verse and its meaning together. Our Tiruppavai 30 pasurams guide gives the meanings. Because the last dawn falls a day earlier in Alberta and BC by this reckoning, follow your temple for how it maps the 30 verses to days.
- 3. Kolam or rangoli: Margazhi kolams are drawn at the threshold at dawn. On a snowy Canadian doorstep, draw it on a board, mat or chalkboard just inside the door, or let children make a paper kolam each day.
- 4. Vishnu puja: flowers, tulsi if you keep a plant indoors over winter, and a short recitation such as the Vishnu Sahasranama on weekends.
- 5. Pongal naivedyam: warm ven pongal or sweet sakkarai pongal is the classic Margazhi offering, and a welcome breakfast on a -20°C Prairie morning.
- 6. Tiruvempavai for Shiva devotees: Tamil Shaiva families recite Manikkavasagar's Tiruvempavai alongside or instead of Tiruppavai.

Practical tips for Canadian families
- Do not drive in the dark on bad roads: early temple visits are lovely, but December and January roads can be icy. Keep the daily practice at home and visit the temple on weekends.
- Winter break: school holidays cover Christmas and New Year, a good stretch for children to learn a pasuram a day by heart.
- Travel to India: if you are in India during the month, follow India's dates. Makar Sankranti / Pongal is usually observed on Friday 15 January 2027 there.
- Temples: many South Indian and Vaishnava temples in Canada hold Tiruppavai recitation through the month. Check your temple's website for its own schedule; we do not list timings.

Can I recite Tiruppavai after sunrise in winter?
Yes. Pre-dawn recitation is the ideal, but in a Canadian winter many families recite the day's pasuram at home before work or school, whatever the clock says. Steady daily practice matters more than the exact minute.
Is the Canadian Dhanurmasam start the same as India?
The calendar day is the same: the first Dhanurmasam day is Wednesday 16 December in India and in every Canadian city in our table. In India the Sun enters Dhanu on Wednesday morning (India time), while in Canada it happens late on Tuesday night local time. Do not convert India's time to Canadian clocks.
