Ekadashi in November 2026

Ekadashi is the eleventh lunar day. It comes twice a month and is sacred to Lord Vishnu. Devotees keep a full or partial fast, avoid grains and beans, pray and chant Vishnu's names. The fast is broken the next morning, on Dwadashi, at the proper parana time.

  • Rama Ekadashi, Thursday 5 November 2026 (calculated): This Ekadashi comes in Diwali week, just before Dhanteras. Confirm the date and parana on Drik Panchang. See our Rama Ekadashi 2026 guide.
  • Devutthana Ekadashi, Friday 20 November 2026 (Drik): Also called Prabodhini Ekadashi. As commonly told, Lord Vishnu wakes from his four-month sleep on this day, and Chaturmas ends. Drik also lists Kansa Vadh and the start of Bhishma Panchak on this day. See Karthika Ekadashi (Prabodhini) 2026.
  • Vaishnava Devutthana Ekadashi and Guruvayur Ekadashi, Saturday 21 November 2026 (Drik): Some Vaishnava traditions keep the Ekadashi fast on this day. Guruvayur Ekadashi is the great festival of the Guruvayur Krishna temple in Kerala. Tulasi Vivah is also listed on this day. See Guruvayur Ekadashi 2026.

When two Ekadashi dates are listed, families usually follow their own sampradaya (tradition) or temple. If you are not sure, ask your family priest or local temple.

Pradosh Vrat in November 2026

Pradosh Vrat is kept on Trayodashi, the thirteenth lunar day, for Lord Shiva. The important time is the evening twilight, called pradosh kaal. Devotees fast during the day, visit a Shiva temple or do Shiva puja at home in the evening, and then eat a simple meal. The name of the vrat follows the weekday.

  • Shukra Pradosh Vrat, Friday 6 November 2026 (calculated): Trayodashi prevails at the 6 November evening. This is also Dhanteras (Drik), so many homes will do Shiva puja and the Dhanteras lamp on the same evening.
  • Ravi Pradosh Vrat, Sunday 22 November 2026 (Drik): This falls in the bright half of Kartika, a month that is especially dear to Shiva devotees in South India.

Masik Shivaratri and Kalashtami

Masik Shivaratri, Saturday 7 November 2026 night (calculated): Masik Shivaratri is the monthly Shivaratri on Krishna Chaturdashi. In 2026 the Chaturdashi runs from about 10:49 AM IST on 7 November to about 11:27 AM IST on 8 November, so it prevails at the midnight of 7 November. Devotees fast, chant 'Om Namah Shivaya' and offer water, milk and bilva leaves to the Shiva linga at night. In Gujarat the same night is Kali Chaudas. See our Kali Chaudas 2026 guide.

Kalashtami, Sunday 1 November 2026 (calculated): Kalashtami is the monthly Krishna Ashtami kept at night for Kala Bhairava, a fierce form of Shiva. It falls on the same evening as Ahoi Ashtami, Sunday 1 November, per Drik. Devotees light a lamp, recite Bhairava prayers and feed dogs, which are linked with Bhairava. The next Kalashtami is Kalabhairav Jayanti on Tuesday 1 December 2026 (Drik). See Kalabhairava Jayanti 2026.

Sankashti and Vinayaka Chaturthi

Ganadhipa Sankashti Chaturthi, Friday 27 November 2026 (Drik): Sankashti is the Krishna Chaturthi of each month, kept for Lord Ganesha. Devotees fast during the day and break the fast after seeing the moon and offering it water. Moonrise time varies by city, so check Drik Panchang for your city. Simple rules for keeping a vrat

Customs differ between regions, families and sampradayas. These general points are widely followed:

  1. Take a sankalpa (a simple intention) in the morning after bathing. Say which vrat you are keeping and why.
  2. Choose a fast you can manage: nirjala (no water), phalahar (fruit and milk), one simple meal, or just avoiding grains.
  3. On Ekadashi, most people avoid rice, wheat, other grains and beans.
  4. Keep the mind calm. Avoid anger, gossip and harsh words. Spend time in prayer, japa or reading scripture.
  5. Break the fast at the right time. Ekadashi is broken on Dwadashi morning, Pradosh after the evening puja, and Sankashti after moonrise.
  6. Give food or charity if you can. This is part of the vrat in most traditions.

A note on health

Fasting is a spiritual practice, not a test of endurance. People who are pregnant or breastfeeding, elderly, unwell, diabetic, or taking regular medicine should speak to a doctor before fasting. Children usually do not keep strict fasts. Drink enough water unless you are healthy and used to a nirjala fast. If you feel faint or unwell, stop the fast and eat. Tradition allows a lighter fast, and sincere prayer has value on its own.

Vrat dates for NRI families

A vrat follows the tithi at a specific time in your own city: sunrise for Ekadashi, evening for Pradosh, midnight for Shivaratri and moonrise for Sankashti. Because the sun and moon rise at different times around the world, a vrat abroad can fall one day before or after the India date. Use Drik Panchang for your city, or follow the calendar of your local temple. Do not convert India's times to your time zone.
