Shiva (Srikanteshwara / Nanjundeshwara) temple · Nanjangud, Mysuru, Karnataka, India
The Srikanteshwara Temple, also called the Nanjundeshwara Temple, is a large Hindu temple to Shiva at Nanjangud in Mysuru district, Karnataka. The town, also known as Garalapuri, stands on the right bank of the Kapila (Kabini) river, a tributary of the Cauvery, according to the Mysuru district administration.
Faith & Tradition
The name Nanjunda refers to Shiva who swallowed the Halahala poison, becoming Vishakanta or Shrikanta; hence the deity is called both Nanjundeshwara and Srikanteshwara. He is also described as one who cures the diseases of his devotees, the district administration notes.
Tradition holds that Tipu Sultan called the deity 'Hakim (doctor) Nanjunda' after his elephant's eyesight was restored, and that he offered the temple an emerald linga ('Pachche Linga'), the Deccan Chronicle reported.
Heritage
The district administration also notes the Raghavendra Math near the temple, founded towards the end of the 15th century.
