Shiva (Kasi Viswanathar) temple · Tenkasi, Tamil Nadu, India
Arulmigu Kasi Viswanathar Temple is a Hindu temple to Shiva as Kasi Viswanathar, with the goddess Ulagamman, in the town of Tenkasi, Tamil Nadu. It is administered by the Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department (The Hindu; Times of India).
Faith & Tradition
The deity is a swayambhu (self-manifested) linga, and devotees believe that worship here brings the same merit as worship at Kasi (Varanasi). The presiding deity is visible from about a kilometre away along the temple's axis, Dinamalar notes.
The ten-day Masi Magam festival in February–March culminates in a car festival in which devotees pull the chariot carrying Ulagamman and Kasi Viswanathar through the main streets (The Hindu). Dinamalar also lists Navaratri, Thirukalyanam in Aippasi, a teppam (float festival) in Avani, and Badra Deepam on the Thai new-moon day.
Heritage
The temple's tower stood flat-topped until 1967; a 180-foot rajagopuram was built in 1990, with a balcony at its ninth tier (Dinamalar).
In April 2025 the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court briefly restrained the HR&CE Department from holding the temple's consecration after a petition alleged hurried renovation work, then vacated the order to allow the consecration scheduled for 7 April (Times of India; The Hindu).
A nine-tier rajagopuram about 180 feet tall (Dinamalar).
