Religious Significance of Vettuvan Koil, Kazhugumalai

Scholars note that its monolithic vimana sets it apart from the monolithic rathas of Ellora and Mamallapuram, and it is the first example of Pandya work in hard stone. Its roughly 122 sculptures include images of deities, women, Nandis and many bhutaganas; an Uma-Maheswara pair shown in casual conversation and a Dakshinamurthy playing the makara yazh are especially noted, the Times of India reported.
