Arulmigu Subramaniyaswamy Temple at Thirupparankundram, about 8 km south of Madurai, Tamil Nadu, is one of the six special abodes (Arupadai Veedu) of Lord Murugan. It is the place where Murugan's marriage to Devayanai, daughter of Indra, was celebrated, according to the Madurai district administration. The temple is administered under the Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department.
Faith & Tradition
Five deities — Sathyagiriswarar (Shiva), Pavalakanivai Perumal (Vishnu), Karpaka Vinayaka, Subramaniar and Durgambika — are worshipped in a single cave shrine, and this is the only one of the six abodes where abhishekam is performed for Murugan's Vel, Dinamalar notes.
Tradition links the hill with the poet Nakkeerar, who sang the Thirumurugatruppadai — the first poem of the Sangam anthology Pathuppattu — here. A spring at the hilltop, said never to dry, is associated with the legend (Dinamalar).
Heritage
The cave shrines are dated to the 8th century and attributed to the Pandyas, and the sanctum is carved out of a single rock, according to the district administration.
Rock-cut cave shrines with a monolithic sanctum; the walls and pillars carry fine carvings (Madurai district administration).
