Religious Significance of Sri Dhandayuthapani Swamy Temple, Palani

The temple's panchamirtham, an abhisheka prasadam offered to the deity, was the first temple prasadam in Tamil Nadu to receive a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, in 2019, The Hindu reported. About 500 grams of panchamirtham is used every day in the abhishekam of the processional deity. According to the GI application, the prasadam dates back to the founding of the temple, which it attributes to the Chera king Cheraman Perumal in the 9th century.

The temple has been at the centre of an investigation into a metal idol made for it in 2004; the Idol Wing CID said the new idol had been made as part of a plot to smuggle the presiding deity out of the country, the Times of India reported.
