Vishnu (Vaikuntanathar / Kallapiran) temple · Srivaikuntam, Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, India
Arulmigu Vaikuntanathar Temple, popularly called the Kallapiran Temple, is a Hindu temple to Vishnu at Srivaikuntam (PIN 628 601) in Thoothukudi district, Tamil Nadu, on the Tirunelveli–Tiruchendur road. It is one of the 108 Divya Desams and the first of the nine Nava Tirupathi temples (Dinamalar; The Hindu).
Faith & Tradition
Vishnu is worshipped here standing, facing east, under the protective hood of Adisesha — unlike the usual reclining form. Nammazhwar refers to the Lord 'standing at Srivaikuntam' in the Thiruvoimozhi (The Hindu; Dinamalar). Among the Nava Tirupathis, Srivaikuntam is associated with the Sun (Dinamalar).
Temple legends, recorded by Dinamalar, tell of Vishnu recovering the secret of creation from the asura Somakan, and of the robber Kaaladhushakan, who surrendered half his plunder to the Lord and whom the Lord protected.
Heritage
During the temple's Chithirai festival, the 'four Garuda seva' is held on the fifth day, and Nammazhwar's mangalasasanam is also part of the celebrations (Dinamani).
A tall gopuram visible from the bridge over the river, with a small mandapam on the river bank (The Hindu).
