Quick answer: Bhairav Chalisa is a devotional Hindi hymn of dohas and chaupais in praise of Shri Bhairav, the fierce yet protective form of Shiva who is honoured as the Kotwal, the guardian, of Kashi. As traditionally attributed, it was composed by the poet Sundardas, whose name appears near its end. Devotees recite it on Sundays or Tuesdays, on Kalashtami each month, and above all on Kalabhairav Jayanti, which in 2026 falls on Tuesday 1 December in India and Monday 30 November in the USA. It is usually followed by the Bhairav aarti, "Jai Bhairav Deva".

This guide has been restored at its original hindutone.com address. Below you will find the complete text in Devanagari and transliteration, a plain-English meaning after every unit, the aarti with its meaning, simple guidance on reciting it at home, and the significance of Bhairav worship as devotees understand it.

Who is Bhairav?

Bhairav, also written Bhairava, is a form of Shiva. His name is linked with bhaya, fear: he is fearsome to look at, yet he removes fear from those who take refuge in him. As commonly told in the Puranas, Shiva manifested as Kaal Bhairav to humble the pride of Brahma, and Bhairav then wandered until he reached Kashi, where he was freed and made the city's guardian. That is why the Chalisa calls him the Kotwal of Kashi again and again.

The Chalisa names several of his forms. Batuk Bhairav is the gentle child form; Kaal Bhairav is the lord of time; Nath Bhairav and Sarva Bhairav are praised alongside them. His mount is a dog, he carries the trident and the damaru, and the sixty-four yoginis dance in his company.

A few chaupais near the middle are strings of Bhairav's names, and there we simply list the names.

Bhairav Aarti: Jai Bhairav Deva, with meaning

After the Chalisa, the aarti is sung while a lamp is waved before Bhairav's image. In this aarti, the closing stanza names its poet, Dharanidhar, and calls the Lord Batuknath, the child form of Bhairav.

How and when to recite Bhairav Chalisa

Best days and times

  • Kalabhairav Jayanti: the appearance day of Kaal Bhairav is the most important day of the year for this Chalisa. In 2026 it falls on Tuesday 1 December in India and Monday 30 November in the USA. Our Kalabhairava Jayanti 2026 guide covers its significance, vrat and mantra.
  • Kalashtami: the Ashtami (eighth lunar day) of the waning moon each month is sacred to Bhairav, and many devotees recite the Chalisa on that day.
  • Sundays and Tuesdays: many families set aside one of these days each week for Bhairav worship.
  • Evening: Bhairav is often worshipped at dusk or after dark, when the lamp is lit. Morning recitation after a bath is equally fine.

How many times

Once on each chosen day is a complete practice. On Kalashtami or Kalabhairav Jayanti some devotees read it 3, 11 or 108 times. If you count on a mala, our article on the sacred number 108 explains why that number is special.

A simple setup at home

  1. Wash your hands and face and sit before a picture of Bhairav or a Shiva lingam. A clean, quiet corner is all you need.
  2. Light a lamp. Many devotees use a mustard-oil or sesame-oil lamp for Bhairav, and the aarti itself praises the four-wicked lamp.
  3. Offer a flower, a little incense, and a simple sweet or some curd, as the aarti mentions.
  4. Make a simple sankalpa in your own words, for example: "Bhairav Baba, I recite this Chalisa with devotion. Please take away fear from our hearts and protect our family."
  5. Recite the opening doha, the chaupais and the closing doha slowly and clearly, then sing the aarti while waving the lamp.
  6. Many devotees feed a dog afterwards, since the dog is Bhairav's mount. Share the sweet as prasad.

Significance and traditional benefits

Bhairav can look frightening: dark, with red eyes, surrounded by spirits, carrying weapons. The Chalisa does not hide this. But again and again it calls him kind, the remover of fear, the one who holds the hand of the helpless. Devotees understand his fierceness as directed at what harms us, never at the devotee.

Traditionally, devotees believe that reciting Bhairav Chalisa with devotion:

  • removes fear and anxiety and gives courage, as chaupais 7, 10 and 13 say;
  • invites Bhairav's protection over the home, the family and journeys;
  • helps clear obstacles from good work, in the words of chaupai 35;
  • purifies the mind and loosens the hold of past wrongdoing, as chaupais 33 and 34 describe.

The Chalisa speaks in the traditional language of devotion: wishes fulfilled, siddhis and treasures gained. These are expressions of faith in Bhairav's grace, not guarantees of particular results. The hymn is best recited as an offering of love and surrender.

Many devotees also chant the Sanskrit Kalabhairava Ashtakam of Adi Shankaracharya, which praises the same Lord of Kashi. On a pilgrimage to Varanasi, it is a long-held custom to seek Kaal Bhairav's blessing along with the darshan of Kashi Vishwanath, just as chaupai 22 says.

Tips for NRI families

  • Mark Kalabhairav Jayanti by your local date. In 2026 the USA observes it on Monday 30 November, a day earlier than India. In other countries, check a reliable panchang for your city.
  • Start with the aarti. Children quickly learn the refrain "Jai Bhairav Deva". Add the Chalisa a few chaupais at a time.
  • Introduce Batuk Bhairav first. Young children relate easily to the gentle boy form, and the aarti itself says he delights people's hearts as a child.
  • Remember the dog. Feeding a street dog or caring for a pet with kindness is a simple, gentle way to honour Bhairav's mount wherever you live.
