Vishnu (Ranganatha) temple · Karamadai, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India
Sri Aranganathaswamy (Ranganathar) Temple at Karamadai, near Mettupalayam in Coimbatore district, Tamil Nadu (PIN 641 104), is a Hindu temple to Vishnu as Ranganatha. It is administered by the Tamil Nadu HR&CE Department (The Hindu; Dinamalar).
Faith & Tradition
The presiding deity is a swayambhu (self-manifested) image of which only the face is visible, unlike the reclining Ranganatha of other temples, The Hindu notes. Dinamalar records that the goddess Ranganayaki, worshipped as Betathamman, has a shrine on a nearby hill; on the fifth day of the Masi Brahmotsavam she is brought down in a sacred pot for the divine wedding.
Ramanuja is said to have stayed here on his way from Srirangam to Thirunarayanapuram (Melkote), and a stone image of him stands at the sanctum entrance (The Hindu; Dinamalar).
Heritage
The Hindu traces the temple to the Chola period, with walls and mandapams added under Thirumalai Nayak and further mandapams under the Mysore Wodeyars. The utsava deity rides a wooden white horse in processions, said to have been donated by a British railway engineer.
A seven-tier, 80-foot rajagopuram and a renovated Vasantha Mandapam were added in a later renovation (The Hindu).
