Faith & Tradition
The deity is a swayambhu (self-manifested) image and the temple faces west. Instead of sacred ash, sand from an ant hill is given as prasad, Dinamalar notes.
The temple's biggest festival is the 20-day Panguni Kundam, in which devotees walk across a fire pit; Dinamalar puts the attendance at over five lakh. During the festival the goddess is taken in procession to neighbouring villages before the fire-walk on a bed of red-hot coals, The Hindu reported.
