Shiva (Vaidyanathaswamy) temple · Madavar Vilagam, Srivilliputhur, Virudhunagar, Tamil Nadu, India
The Vaidyanathaswamy Temple at Madavar Vilagam is a Hindu temple to Shiva, worshipped as Vaidyanathaswamy with the goddess Sivakami Amman, about a kilometre from the twin Andal and Vatapatrasayee temples of Srivilliputhur in Virudhunagar district, Tamil Nadu. Its most striking feature is a graceful gopuram that towers over the neighbourhood, The Hindu notes.
Faith & Tradition
Vaidyanatha means 'lord of healing', and the temple is associated with cures. According to temple tradition reported by the New Indian Express, Shiva helped a woman about to give birth by appearing in the form of her mother, and drew a line on the ground with his toe-nail to bring forth a spring when she was thirsty.
Heritage
Much of the shrine as it stands today owes its existence to Thirumalai Nayak, the 17th-century ruler of Madurai, The Hindu reports. According to tradition recounted by Dinamalar and the New Indian Express, the king suffered from a severe stomach ailment, stayed at the temple for 48 days and was cured; in gratitude he left his ivory palanquin at the temple and built a dance hall for the deity. The Hindu notes that scholars of Srivilliputhur's art also record his patronage after his cure.
The temple is of relatively modest size, with a tall gopuram as its most prominent feature (The Hindu).
