Vishnu (Devanathaswamy) temple · Thiruvahindrapuram, Cuddalore, Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu, India
Devanathaswamy Temple, also called Thiruvanthipuram Kovil, is a Hindu temple to Vishnu as Devanathaswamy, with his consort Lakshmi as Hemabhujavalli, at Thiruvahindrapuram on the outskirts of Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu. Built in the Dravidian style, it is one of the 108 Divya Desams glorified in the Divya Prabandham of the Alvar saints, according to the Cuddalore district administration.
Faith & Tradition
Dinamalar records the temple's traditions: the place is said to have been laid out by Adisesha, Brahma is said to have done penance here (hence the name Brahmachalam), and the nearby hill is called Oushadhachalam from a legend that a piece of the Sanjeevi mountain fell here as Hanuman carried it. The Garuda river flows nearby. The temple's Narasimha is shown with Lakshmi on his right lap, unlike the usual tradition.
The ten-day Chithirai Brahmotsavam, with Garuda Seva on the fifth day and Theerthavari on the ninth, draws over a lakh devotees, and the Purattasi Maha Desikan Utsav is among its many festivals (Dinamalar).
Heritage
The present temple is believed to date from the Medieval Cholas, with later additions by the Pandyas, Hoysalas and Vijayanagara rulers. More than 50 inscriptions record grants from rulers including Kulothunga Chola I, Vikrama Chola, Rajaraja Chola III, Jatavarman Sundara Pandyan and the Vijayanagara king Achyuta Deva Raya (Cuddalore district administration).
In 2010 Karnataka's chief minister offered to contribute towards the temple's development, Tamil Nadu's HR&CE minister told The Hindu.
