Devi (Kalikambal) temple · George Town, Chennai, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India
Sri Kalikambal Kamateswarar Temple (Sri Kalikambal Kamateswara Devasthanam) is a Hindu temple to the goddess Kalikambal with Kamateswarar, on Thambu Chetty Street in George Town (Parrys), Chennai. It is described as a 400-year-old temple and one of the well-known temples of the area (The Hindu; Dinamani; Deccan Chronicle).
Faith & Tradition
According to historian V. Sriram, quoted by The Hindu, the goddess — also known as Chenna Ammal — was worshipped by the Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji, who came here incognito in 1667. The temple carries an inscription of Mahakavi Bharathi's poem 'Yaadhumaagi nindrai Kaali', and the composer Aandavan Pichai wrote 'Ullam urugudhaiya' here (The Hindu).
The temple's annual Vaikasi Brahmotsavam lasts about ten days, during which the goddess is taken in procession through the streets, Dinamani reported in 2022.
Heritage
The temple is a religious denominational temple governed by a scheme decree of 1935. In 2019 a single judge of the Madras High Court appointed a fit person to run it pending trustee elections; a division bench later set that order aside, holding that the government should conduct the elections as in the past (Deccan Chronicle).
A renovation by sthapathis included repainting the rajagopuram and restoring the shrines of Kamateswarar, Ganesha and Murugan (The Hindu).
