Quick answer: To celebrate Diwali at home in 2026, start two weeks before with cleaning and decluttering, buy diyas and puja samagri one week before, light the first lamp and the Yama Deepam on Dhanteras, Friday 6 November, take the early oil bath on Naraka Chaturdashi, and perform Lakshmi Puja on Sunday 8 November within your city's evening muhurat (5:54 PM to 7:50 PM in New Delhi, per Drik Panchang). Finish with Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj (India: 10 and 11 November; USA, Canada and UK: 9 and 10 November).

Below is a realistic day-by-day plan for a family home, followed by safety notes, apartment and NRI adaptations, and a printable checklist.

Two weeks before (from about 25 October)

  • Declutter one room or cupboard a day rather than everything at once. Donate clothes, books and toys you no longer use.
  • Deep-clean the puja corner, the kitchen and the main entrance first; these matter most for Lakshmi Puja.
  • Wash and polish brass or silver puja vessels and lamps.
  • Buy clay diyas, oil or ghee, cotton wicks and a few spare LED tealights. Soak new clay diyas in water for a few hours and dry them, a common tip to reduce oil absorption.
  • Plan sweets and snacks: decide what you will make and what you will buy. Ideas: Diwali sweets recipes 2026 and 35 traditional Diwali sweets, snacks and festive dishes.
  • Make a gift list for family, neighbours, domestic staff and colleagues.

One week before (from about 1 November)

  • Practise one rangoli design on paper or the floor so the real one is quick. See Diwali rangoli designs 2026.
  • Check the puja samagri against the list in Lakshmi Ganesh puja vidhi and samagri 2026: Lakshmi and Ganesha images or idols, kalash, red cloth, kumkum, haldi, akshat, flowers, incense, camphor, ghee lamp, sweets, fruit, coins, betel leaves and nuts.
  • Put up lights, a toran and lanterns. Ideas: Diwali decoration and diya ideas.
  • Make sweets that keep well, such as laddoos or dry snacks.
  • Note your city's Lakshmi Puja muhurat and set a reminder.
  • Rama Ekadashi falls on Thursday 5 November in India (calculated; confirm on Drik Panchang); some families fast that day as part of Diwali week. See Rama Ekadashi 2026.

Dhanteras: Friday 6 November

  • Finish the main cleaning and light a lamp at the altar in the evening.
  • Dhanteras puja muhurat in New Delhi: 6:02 PM to 7:58 PM local time (Drik Panchang). Calculated (HinduTone, Drik method): Hyderabad 6:16 PM to 8:13 PM, Chennai 6:15 PM to 8:09 PM.
  • Light the Yama Deepam, a lamp placed outside the main door facing south, praying for the family's protection and long life.
  • Many families remember Dhanvantari, the divine healer, and pray for good health.
  • Buying a new utensil, gold, silver or a broom is a popular custom in many families, not a requirement.
  • Full guide: Dhanteras 2026: date, puja vidhi and Yama Deepam.

Saturday 7 November: prep day (Naraka Chaturdashi abroad)

  • In India, Saturday is a free preparation day: cook, set up the altar and finish decorations.
  • In the USA, Canada and the UK, Saturday 7 November is Naraka Chaturdashi per Drik Panchang, so the early oil bath (abhyanga snan) is on Saturday morning there.
  • Lay out puja clothes, fill and arrange the diyas on trays, and charge LED lights.
  • For the kids: Diwali activities for kids: crafts and quiz.

Sunday 8 November morning: Naraka Chaturdashi oil bath (India)

Sunday 8 November evening: Lakshmi Puja

Perform Lakshmi Puja within your city's muhurat, which falls in Pradosh Kaal after sunset. Sample cities (each in its own local time):

Never convert India's muhurat into another country's time; each city has its own. Full lists: Diwali 2026 date and Lakshmi Puja muhurat, India city-wise muhurat, USA city by city and UK city by city.

A simple sequence:

  1. Bathe or freshen up, and gather the family at the altar about 15 minutes before the muhurat.
  2. Light the main lamp and offer prayers to Ganesha first.
  3. Invoke Goddess Lakshmi; offer water, kumkum, haldi, akshat, flowers, incense, the lamp and sweets.
  4. Chant a Lakshmi mantra or stotra you know, and perform aarti together.
  5. Light diyas through the house: altar, main door, windows, kitchen, and outside if safe.
  6. Share prasad and a family meal. Many families keep a lamp burning safely through the night, under watch.

Govardhan Puja and Annakut (India Tue 10 Nov; abroad Mon 9 Nov)

  • Make a small Govardhan hill with cow dung (traditional in villages), rice, or simply arrange food in a mound.
  • Offer an Annakut, a mountain of food: many dishes, sweets and vegetables offered to Krishna, then shared.
  • In Gujarati homes this is also the New Year (Bestu Varas), and in parts of South India Bali Padyami is observed.
  • Guides: Govardhan Puja and Annakut 2026 and Govardhan Puja and Bali Padyami 2026.

Bhai Dooj (India Wed 11 Nov; abroad Tue 10 Nov)

  • Sisters apply tilak, perform a small aarti and feed their brothers; brothers give a gift and promise to care for them.
  • If siblings are far apart, do the tilak on a video call and send sweets by post.
  • Guide: Bhai Dooj 2026: date, story and tika vidhi.

After Diwali: sharing and giving

  • Share sweet boxes with neighbours, including those who do not celebrate Diwali.
  • Give to a food bank, temple annadanam or a charity you trust.
  • Thank the people who help your household through the year.
  • Clean up wax, oil and cracker debris; recycle what you can.

Safety: lamps and crackers

  • Place diyas on metal or ceramic trays, away from curtains, paper decorations, rangoli powder and walkways.
  • Wear cotton near lamps; tie back dupattas and long hair.
  • Never leave lamps unattended, and keep them out of reach of children and pets.
  • Crackers only outdoors, with an adult, a bucket of water or sand nearby, and only where local rules allow.
  • Read Diwali cracker safety precautions and eco-friendly, cracker-free Diwali ideas.

Apartment and NRI adaptations

  • Smoke detectors: incense, camphor and many ghee lamps can trigger them. Ventilate, keep flames away from detectors, and never disable an alarm.
  • Rentals: check your lease and building rules on open flames. LED diyas and string lights give the same glow.
  • Diwali is on a Sunday in 2026, so the main puja is on a weekend nearly everywhere. Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj fall on weekday evenings abroad.
  • Use your local temple's calendar and your own city's muhurat.

What is the Lakshmi Puja muhurat on Diwali 2026?

It depends on your city. Drik Panchang gives 5:54 PM to 7:50 PM for New Delhi on Sunday 8 November. The HinduTone calculator (Drik method) gives 6:28 PM to 8:28 PM for Mumbai and 6:18 PM to 8:20 PM for Bengaluru. Abroad, use your own city's local times.

Can I do Lakshmi Puja at home without a priest?

Yes. Most families perform it themselves. A clean altar, Lakshmi and Ganesha images, a lamp, flowers, kumkum, rice, sweets and a sincere prayer are enough. Follow a simple step-by-step vidhi and your family's customs.

How many diyas should I light on Diwali?

There is no fixed number in most traditions. Families commonly light lamps at the altar, the main door, windows, the kitchen and near water sources, and some light an odd number such as 5, 11 or 21. Light only as many as you can safely watch.

We live in a rented apartment abroad. How can we celebrate safely?

Use LED diyas or a few real lamps on a non-flammable tray away from smoke detectors, curtains and exits; never leave flames unattended; check your lease and building rules; and skip crackers indoors and on balconies.

Editor's note (8 October 2026)

This plan reflects common household practice; rituals and customs vary by region and family. Festival dates follow Drik Panchang for each country. Muhurat times labelled calculated come from the HinduTone calculator (Drik method, validated against Drik Panchang) and should be confirmed for your city. India's times are never converted for other countries.
