Gujarat: Vagh Baras to Labh Panchami

Gujarat's Diwali is a six-day season that ends with a new year. Vagh Baras falls on Thursday 5 November 2026 (calculated; some calendars may list 6 November, so follow your local panchang). Kali Chaudas is on the night of Saturday 7 November (calculated), when families pray for protection from evil.

On Diwali, Sunday 8 November 2026, traders perform Chopda Puja, the worship of new account books. Maharashtra opens Diwali with Vasu Baras on Thursday 5 November 2026 (calculated), when cows and calves are worshipped. Lakshmi Puja is on Sunday 8 November. Diwali Padwa (Bali Pratipada) on Tuesday 10 November honours the bond between husband and wife, and Bhau Beej on Wednesday 11 November honours brothers and sisters.

West Bengal: Kali Puja, Bhai Phonta and Jagaddhatri Puja

In Bengal, Diwali night is Kali Puja. On Sunday 8 November 2026, the Goddess Kali is worshipped through the night in homes and community pandals, and lamps are lit across the state. Bhai Phonta, when sisters put a mark of sandalwood on their brothers' foreheads, is on Wednesday 11 November (Bengali panjikas usually match, but follow your panjika).

Bihar and Jharkhand: Chhath Puja and the Sonepur Mela

Chhath is the great festival of Bihar and Jharkhand, and of eastern Uttar Pradesh too. The main Chhath Puja day is Sunday 15 November 2026, per Drik Panchang. On that evening, devotees stand in rivers and ponds to offer arghya to the setting sun. The morning arghya follows at sunrise the next day. The whole observance lasts four days, with strict fasting.

Mathura marks Kansa Vadh, the day Krishna is said to have defeated the tyrant Kansa, on Friday 20 November 2026. Akshaya Navami on Wednesday 18 November is also observed in the Braj region. In Varanasi, Vaikuntha Chaturdashi with Manikarnika Snan falls on Monday 23 November.

In Rajasthan, Kartika Purnima on Tuesday 24 November 2026 is the day of the holy dip in Pushkar Lake, near the famous Brahma temple. The Pushkar fair grows up around this full moon. On Kartika Purnima, Tuesday 24 November, Odisha celebrates Boita Bandana. Before dawn, people float small paper or banana-bark boats with lamps on rivers and ponds. Tamil Deepavali is on Sunday 8 November 2026, the same day as Kedar Gauri Vrat (Deepavali Nombu). Skanda Sashti, with the Soora Samharam at Murugan temples such as Tiruchendur, falls on Sunday 15 November.

The Tamil month of Karthigai begins on Tuesday 17 November 2026 (calculated). The Malayalam month of Vrischikam begins on Tuesday 17 November 2026, and Drik Panchang lists the start of the Sabarimala Mandala Pooja season on the same day. Many devotees wear the Ayyappa mala and begin the 41-day vratham.
